This month, events to raise money for local charities and worthy causes abound. Need your lawn raked? Students from Davidson College’s Habitat for Humanity will take care of it, in exchange for a donation to their next home build. For the athletically minded, there’s a Sunday golf tournament, and a pair of runs: one through Lake Norman State Park and a low key 5k through scenic Davidson neighborhoods. In the arts, Davidson College a capella groups perform to benefit special needs children. The famed Beggar Boys return to St. Alban’s complete with Irish dancing and holiday tunes to benefit listeners and the Mooresville Soup Kitchen alike. And even holiday shopping can be altruistic when it’s done at the Mt. Zion Crafts and Gifts Show in Cornelius.
A CAPPELLA CONCERT FOR PTA TOO
On Sunday, Nov. 15, at 5 p.m. Davidson College a cappella groups The Generals, Androgyny and The Delilahs will host a charity concert on campus to benefit Davidson Elementary School PTA-Too and raise awareness about special needs related issues.
Proceeds from the event will help make attendance at camps and programs possible for special needs children. Parents of exceptional children are often faced with tremendous obstacles to overcome and fewer options for their children. This concert will help pave the way for more opportunities for their children, at no cost, in order to help them reach further, run faster, climb higher and dream bigger!
The concert will be held in the Duke Family Performance Hall on the Davidson College campus with donations accepted at the door.
General public seating is limited. To make a reservation, email davidsongenerals@gmail.com. Up to 350 community tickets will be available for pick-up. On the day of the concert, the remaining seats will be on a first come, first served, basis.
For more details on the concert, please contact Jeni Cooper at jeni@pta-too.org. For more information on PTA-Too, visit www.pta-too.org.
If you wish to donate but cannot attend the concert, make checks payable to Davidson College marked for the IDF Account and mail to: Improve Davidson Fund, c/o Davidson College, PO Box 7182, Davidson, NC 28035.
RAKE-A-THON 2009
Students from Davidson College’s Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter are raking leaves for local residents this weekend (Saturday) and the next two Saturdays (Nov. 14 and 21), 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., to raise money for their next home build. Organizer Zaynah Johnson said they have one team this weekend, and multiple teams lined up the next two for the community service project.
A lot of students want to be involved in some kind of physical activity with the Habitat chapter, but they can’t always work on a Wildcat house, Ms. Johnson said. The leaf-raking helps fulfill that and raise money to build a house. A $15 donation is suggested, though the chapter welcomes larger amounts.
Questions: Email Ms. Johnson at zajohnson@davidson.edu.
