‘Staring’ lecture, meetings, Halloween events

Our weekend has a variety of Halloween-themed music and events in and around Davidson. Kids and weekendcalparents are invited to wear their costumes in the annual Halloween march on Main Street Friday evening. Also Friday, organist Henry Lebedinsky plays a spooky accompaniment to the silent film “Hunchback of Notre Dame” in two shows at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. And over at Davidson Day School, the first student theater production of the year Friday and Saturday features dramatizations of four scary stories by Edgar Allen Poe.

On Thursday, Emory University professor Rosemarie Garland-Thomson presents a lecture based on her latest book, “Staring: How We Look,” in conjunction with the exhibition “STARING,” on view in Davidson’s Belk Visual Arts Center.

On Friday, artist, writer and photographer Mike Martin performs “Approaching History: a life book” at Warehouse Performing Arts Center, Cornelius. The event includes images, voice recordings, prose poems, verse, lyrical documentaries, memoir and family letters to portray his history, relationships andlife experiences. Free. Wine reception to follow.

  • SATURDAY, NOV. 14, noon to 2:30 p.m., Davidson Village Green – “A Day of Music, Food & Fun,” a free community event that serves as the finale of the DavidsonReads 2009 program. By bringing Davidson’s different religious and community groups together by celebrating with singing, dancing and food we hope to illustrate the best lessons of James McBride’s “The Color of Water.” Local churches, synagogues and schools are planning to participate with choral and musical performances, an ethnic dancing showcase and dramatic readings.
