YMCA triathlon, ‘End of Summer’ party and more

The annual Lake Norman Family YMCA Triathlon is this weekend, this year expanded to 2 days, with experts competing Saturday and the rest of the field Sunday. Our Weekend Calendar also has a variety of other events in and around Davidson,
from a fund-raising dinner tonight at Toast Cafe for the Autism Society of NC to a Sunday “End of Summer” party at Summit Coffee. There’s a free concert tonight at Mooresville Town Hall with Tsunami Wave Riders. And don’t forget Saturday’s free bluegrass concert at Cornelius Presbyterian Church, with local favorites Davidson Express.

Athletes are expected to begin arriving for the Lake Norman Family YMCA fund-raising triathlon both Saturday and Sunday mornings at 6 a.m. Off-site parking is available at Ada Jenkins Center on Gamble Street and the former Davidson Clinic building on South Main Street, south of the dentists’ offices and South Main Square. (See our Aug. 17 preview article [1] for more about the Y’s big fund-raiser.)
The races begin with the first swimmers hitting the water at the Y in Cornelius at 7 a.m. both days. They’ll depart in waves depending on their ages and divisions. The event includes biking and running as well. Residents along the routes should be on the lookout for athletes through the morning. YMCA officials estimate they’ll be biking through the east part of Davidson from 7:30 – 10:30 a.m. and running through Victoria Bay in Cornelius from 8 to 11 a.m.
THURSDAY, AUG. 20, 5:30 p.m., Mooresville Town Hall, 413 N. Main St., Mooresville – Free outdoor concert with the award-winning beach music band Tsunami Wave Riders. Details: www.ci.mooresville.nc.us [2].
THURSDAY, AUG. 20, 6:30 to 8 p.m., Toast Cafe, Main Street – Benefit dinner for Autism. Cost: $40/person for 3-course dinner with wine. Half the proceeds from this dinner go to The Autism Society of North Carolina and a representative will be present that night. Reservations: 704-655-2778.
THURSDAY, AUG. 20, 8-11 p.m., Summit Coffee, 128 S. Main St. – Live music: Billy Jones and The Pocket.
THURSDAY, AUG. 20, 8:30 p.m., Jetton Village Green, 19818 N. Cove Road, off West Catawba Avenue, Cornelius – 2009 Cornelius Outdoor Cinema Series presents a screening of “High School Musical 3: Senior Year” on the inflatable outdoor screen. Free. Details on the Cornelius Parks & Rec website [3].

SATURDAY, AUG. 22, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Cornelius Presbyterian Church, 21209 Catawba Ave., at Church Street, Cornelius – Bluegrass Concert Saturday, with Davidson Express, Davidson-based bluegrass/folk band. SATURDAY AUG. 22 and SUNDAY AUG. 23, Lake Norman Family YMCA, Cornelius – 2009 Lake Norman YMCA Triathlon (run, bike, swim), with 1,200 participants from as far as Washington State. Experts and advanced racers compete Saturday, novices and teams Sunday. Note that racing may affect traffic on some local streets both days. DAVIDSON COLLEGE VISUAL ARTS CENTER, Smith Gallery, Davidson College, 315 N.
