On Saturday, June 13, 2009, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., more than 1,000 people are expected to attend the Lake Norman YMCA’s annual Live at the Lake, this year with a Hawaiian Luau theme. It’s free and open to the entire community.

This year’s event features Aloha Hula Dancers, music, food vendors, lake activities and fun for the entire family. Adults can enjoy beach volleyball and dance lessons on the beach. Inflatable slides, bounce houses, face-painting, crafts and games will keep kids entertained throughout the day. The event will also include health and wellness information and business vendors from the area.

“We are especially excited about Live at the Lake this year,” said Erika Arnold, the Lake Norman YMCA Executive Director. “Not only is the event a great opportunity for everyone to celebrate our community, but this year it will benefit our community programs to help those who need our assistance.”

All sponsorship and vendor proceeds will benefit the Lake Norman YMCA Community Outreach campaign. In 2009, the branch’s goal is to raise $215,000 in order to provide more children, individuals and families the opportunity to participate in day camp, afterschool, preschool, swim lessons and active older adult programs. The branch’s signature outreach programs include the Starfish Academy, which helps 72 1st and 2nd graders improve their reading and literacy skills each year, and the Adaptive Waterski program, which helps children overcome physical disabilities by learning to ski.

A 5K Family Fun Run will precede the luau at 9 a.m. and the Community Outreach Raft Race is scheduled to conclude the day’s festivities at 2:00pm. Proceeds from both events will also support community outreach.

Due to the large crowd and limited access, guests will park at Cornelius Elementary School and Children’s Community School. Shuttles to and from the parking areas will be provided during the entire event. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held Sunday, June 14, 1–5 p.m.
