Town Board, teen bash and community chorus

We start this week with the Memorial Day holiday, sort of (public schools are in session), and it gets busy from there. There’s a
monthly Town Board work session on Tuesday, and Davidson College economist David Martin talks to the Davidson Senior Scholars Wednesday. We have school events from the Children’s Community School. And on Friday, Lake Norman Teen Council hosts its End of Year Bash. On Saturday and Sunday, North Mecklenburg Community Chorus performs at Duke Family Performance Hall at the college.

TUESDAY, MAY 26, 6 p.m., Town Hall, 216 S. Main St. – Town Board monthly work session. Agenda includes discussions of: [1] the proposed Municipal Services District and commercial property tax surcharge for the Exit 30 area,improvements at Roosevelt Wilson Park, street resurfacing plans, recommendations for regional transportation improvements by the Lake Norman Transportation Commission, and a bid for federal stimulus funds by the MI-Connection cable system. WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, school hours, Children’s Community School, 565 Griffith St. – Sixth graders are wrapping up a yearlong study by creating their own Holocaust Museum, which will be open to view.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 2 to 3:30 p.m., Davidson Parks & Recreation office, 416 Armour St. – Davidson Senior Scholars presents a program on “Trying to Understand the Economic News” with Davidson College economics Prof. David Martin. Free. Details or to register, 704-892-3349.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 4 p.m., Davidson public library branch, on the Village Green – “The Chatroom,” book group for 5th grade and up. This month: “Nathan Fox: Dangerous Times,” [2] by L. Brittney.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 27, 7:30 p.m., Ada Jenkins Center, 212 Gamble St. – UU Fellowship of Lake Norman meeting, with a discussion about God and gods. Who is God? What is God? Is there a God? God/gods have been talked about since the beginning of recorded history. Free. www.uulakenorman.org [3]
THURSDAY, MAY 28, 8:30-9 a.m., South Main Square, 442 S. Main St. – South Main Square business networking group monthly gathering. This is a group of Davidson-based professionals who meet for fast-paced discussions, bartering, information sharing and more. THURSDAY, MAY 28, 5-8 p.m., Children’s Community School Gym, 565 Griffith St. – Children’s Community School presents the CAN (Changing Africa Now) Festival, the culmination of a yearlong study of Africa by seventh graders. The festival includes drumming and dance lessons by One Neighborhood, in Birkdale Village. NOTE the new location for this event; it has been moved away from the Village Green because of the weather.
FRIDAY, MAY 29, 5-8 p.m., Village Green, Main Street and Concord Road – Last day of school for Children’s Community School of Davidson.
FRIDAY, MAY 29, 7-11 p.m., Havana Banquet & Ballroom, 17105-102 Kenton Drive, Cornelius – Lake Norman Teen Council holds its “End of Year Bash.” This will give teens an opportunity to learn more about the council, meet members, and meet the newly elected Executive Board. SATURDAY, MAY 30, 8 a.m. to noon, downtown Davidson next to Town Hall – Davidson Farmers Market, with local farmers and vendors selling meats, produce, dairy products, baked goods, and other items. Music this week is an Open Irish session with Henry Lebedinsky. Cooking demonstration this week features Wild Turkey Farms products. JUNE 5-20, Warehouse Performing Arts Center, 9216-A Westmoreland Road, Cornelius – Warehouse Productions presents “An Empty Plate in the Grand Cafe du Boeuf,” by Michael Hollinger. Directed by Jim Esposito. Set in Paris in 1961, it’s about a wealth American expatriate who owns the Grand Cafe. It’s a dark comedy that features the joys of cooking, sex, bullfighting and works of Ernest Hemingway. Featuring actors Lou Dalessandro, Cat Rutledge, Matt Merrell, Rachel Jeffreys, Christian Love and Joseph Peterson. Performances at 7:30 p.m. (doors and bar open 6:45) Fridays and Saturdays June 5-6, 12-13, and 19-20.

DAVIDSON DASH SHUTTLE BUS – Mondays, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Town of Davidson has begun service on a weekly shuttle bus called Davidson Dash. The bus will visit downtown, South Main Street, Sadler Square and the Harris Teeter shopping center near Exit 30. Cost: $1 per roundtrip.
