Our Davidson-area calendar this week includes another April Is for Arts weekend, with the Art on the Green festival, the dedication of that new public art sculpture outside the post office, and a Sunday Concert on the Green. It also will be Reunion Weekend at the College. On Tuesday, the town hosts another in a series of community planning forums.
Davidson College grad and Army 1st Lt. Kevin Bell speaks tonight about his experiences in Afghanistan. Lectures at the college look at life after death, art collecting and pop culture. And golf tourneys and other fund-raisers are also on tap, including Tuesday’s dine-out Autism Aware Fare.
And looking ahead, just a reminder that 2009 Davidson Town Day is scheduled Saturday, May 2, on the Village Green. The day begins with the Day Care Dash fund-raising foot race at 8 a.m. Opening ceremonies for Town Day are at 10. Details below. [1]

MONDAY, APRIL 20, 7 p.m., Davidson College Chambers Hall, Room 1027 – Dean Rusk International Studies Program presents 1st Lt. Kevin Bell ’05, who returned recently from a year leading a dismounted reconnaissance platoon in Paktya province in Afghanistan. The title of his talk is “Pulling Teeth: a Platoon Leader’s Perspective after a Year in Afghanistan.” Free.

THURSDAY, APRIL 23, 12:30 p.m., River Run Country Club – Fifth Annual Dick Sanderson Driving 4 Life Golf Tournament [11]. Lunch provided at noon. The event honors local resident Dick Sanderson, who was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease) in 2004, and raises funds to advance ALS research and assist the Sanderson family.
