The Helping Paws Dog Show is scheduled May 16, 3-6 p.m., at Woodlawn School. Organizers say they hope to raise funds for area shelters Project Halo and Lake Norman Animal Rescue while offering the public an opportunity to adopt dogs from Project Halo, a no-kill shelter.
Woodlawn School is just north of Davidson, on Presbyterian Road off Hwy 115. The event is a non-traditional dog show, with competitions for Best Trick, Best Groomed, Best Personality and Best in Show. Confirmed show judges include: Diana Woods of Davidson, a dog trainer and educator, and Rachel Wacker, animal activist and veteran dog show organizer.
The Helping Paws Dog Show is the brainchild of Woodlawn sixth-grader Brooke Phillips, 12, whose family adopted Roxie from Project Halo on Brooke’s 10th birthday. Ever since, she has been eager to help other families and dogs find one another.

Brooke and Roxie.
A Woodlawn School 6th grader, Brooke was inspired to hold the dog show by her own experience, plus the animal advocacy work that her class is doing as part of their service learning.
