The North Mecklenburg Senior Center on Thursday, Jan. 12, will celebrate its grand opening in its new location, at 16601 Old Statesville Road, Huntersville. The center, that moved to Huntersville from Cornelius Nov. 7, will offer activities from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and will hold a ribbon cutting at noon.
Also in January, the center offers a variety of classes, including yoga, tai chi and computers. Gentle Yoga 10:15 – 11:10 – Tuesdays starting Jan. 10
Gentle Yoga – appropriate for 50+ students, both experienced and beginners are welcome. The class begins on the floor then progresses to standing positions then back to the floor for the end of the class. We will work on stress relief, balance, ROM and breath. Students will need to be able to get up and down from the floor without assistance. Please bring a yoga mat and a large bath or beach towel or small blanket to each class and an eye bag if you have one.
Fees: $32/month OR $16/month for annual discount card holders
Chair Yoga 11:15 – 12:00 Tuesdays starting Jan. 10
Chair Yoga – Appropriate for those who are not able to get up and down from the floor but still want to have the benefits of yoga. We will begin seated in the chair, progress to standing positions, using the chair for support, then sit back to the chair for our closing relaxation. Students should bring a large beach towel or a small blanket to class each week. We will work on stress relief, balance, ROM and breath. Please bring a sleep mask with and elastic band that you can use while seated for relaxation.

Arthritis Foundation Tai Chi – 1:30 p.m. – Wednesdays starting Jan. 4
Certified Instructor Mike Gentile will teach you the moves in slow and gentle manner. The benefits of Tai Chi include increased balance, strength, and coordination.

Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program 11:00–12:15pm Jan. 16 – March 7
Eight week session with classes held every Monday and Wednesday 11:00 – 12:15 pm. To get the most out of this program, it is recommended that all classes will be attended.
A group exercise and educational program designed for all who are challenged by Arthritis and related diseases. Those with other chronic conditions and those who want to get moving after being sedentary for a while will benefit from this program as well.
This program is FREE and open to all in the community who qualify regardless of age.
