Mother’s Day: Dining out?

dining bugMother’s Day always presents a dilemma: To feast at home or to take Mom out for brunch or dinner. The former works if you’ve got someone else around who’s handy in the kitchen – or even on the grill. The latter is always a fallback, especially given the large number of restaurants that offer Mother’s Day Sunday specials. Today we offer you both choices – a twist on an old standby spring recipe (grilled leg of lamb, see next story on this page) and a few ideas for dining out.

Mother’s Day around our house growing up always brought some kind of special dinner – usually something not on Dad’s or we kids’ lists of of favorites, but something Mom wanted that she couldn’t get away with cooking any other time. Regular customers at Thai Marlai rarely order from the menu, owner Toi Rogers said. “Usually, they’ll just say, ‘Toi, fix us something good,’” she said.

It is that spirit of culinary adventure that Ms. Rogers hopes to foster in everyone that visits her restaurant, at 19700 One Norman Boulevard, near the Blockbuster. So earlier this month she planned a buffet meal, served family style.

John Elliott showed us how the shop makes its solid chocolate Easter bunnies. It’s a big time of year for the chocolate business, and the shop at Davidson Commons expected to sell several hundred of the confections by Easter Sunday.

In the DVR age I rarely watch commercials anymore, but every once in a while I’ll catch one or two. A couple of weeks ago I saw one showing a mother making Rice Krispie Treats with her children, but they were in the shape of eggs for Easter.

Meanwhile, Davidson Farmer’s Market was blown out and rained out last week, but the farmers are back this Saturday, April 23, with local food for your Easter feast – and more. And we have info about the Davidson Lands Conservancy’s annual Toast the Earth tasting on April 29.
