HUNTERSVILLE – Asheville-based grocery chain Earth Fare calls itself “the healthy supermarket,” and as it opened its newest store in Huntersville this week, CEO Jack Murphy said it’s hoping to win customers with its insistence on a different “food philosophy.”
Earth Fare won’t sell anything with high-fructose corn syrup, a now notorious “bad boy” ingredient in many processed foods. It emphasizes organic foods and local produce. And when it says “local,” it means it: It won’t put a local label on anything grown more than 100 miles from a store, Mr. Murphy said in an interview. Continue Reading

I’m generally a purist when it comes to my guacamole. I might substitute lemon juice for lime juice, or make other slight recipe alterations, but add an apple? I was skeptical when I saw this recipe. But, I was also intrigued.
My mom told me about this recipe months ago. She clipped it from Parade Magazine and tested it at several parties, saying it got rave reviews.
Trusting her, I decided to whip up a batch for a dinner party to see how it went.
Wow! The tart Granny Smith apples played off the spicy peppers, the sour lime juice, and the cool avocado. Add some salty tortilla chips, and you’ve got a delightful gustatory sensation! Recipe below. Continue Reading

A recipe for “Kaleidoscope Salsa” that combined tomatoes, hot and sweet peppers, corn, lime and cilantro earned top honors last Saturday for Ashley and Brian Neff of Davidson in the Davidson Farmer’s Market’s annual Salsa Showdown.
Four teams competed for top honors again this year, and they were required to use ingredients purchased at the market. The dish winning clearly takes its name from the multi-colored ingredients that went into it. The Neffs said their ingredients cost a total of $24. Continue Reading

Similar to a pesto, chimichurri is an herb-based sauce that goes well with just about anything. In Argentina, it’s used as both a sauce and a marinade, but I prefer to use it as a sauce. One of the area’s most exotic new restaurants, Marrakesh, has closed its doors just one week after it opened them and the owners cited financial problems as the reason. In other dining news, the Town of Cornelius is accepting bids from mobile food and beverage concessionaires through Aug. 3, and McAlister’s Deli will give away free tea Thursday.
