Tim Groody
Chef Tim Groody has exited the kitchen at Flatiron Kitchen + Taphouse, the downtown Davidson eatery he helped open last summer. But Mr. Groody will remain a minority partner in a group that includes partners Michael Lavecchia and Chad Hollingsworth, his partners said Wednesday. Read the full story

To heck with New Year’s resolutions. I know the season of over-indulgence is over, but I won’t deny that I’ve stockpiled peppermint ice cream and have frozen Christmas cookies to make sure the season lasts just a tad bit longer. I recently had to test a recipe for cream puffs for an upcoming class, and before I knew it, I was whipping up a batch of peppermint profiteroles. Read the full story

Davidson’s recent adoption of new rules allowing us to keep up to four hens in our backyards may have you thinking about what it might take to join the trend. This Saturday, Jan. 8, Greg and Jennifer Coleman on Virginia Road will offer a free how-to workshop, based on their experience raising chickens in Davidson and former homes in Raleigh and Austin, Texas.

A friend received a shipment of pears from one of those holiday gift catalogs, and they are nearly perfect. Sweet and juicy. The problem is, there are 16 – more than her one-person household can munch right away. She needs ideas. Here’s one (and of course it works on local or store-bought pears, too):
