Several competitors walked away with awards Saturday, April 30, in the Ada Jenkins Center’s third annual “Fire” barbecue festival. Ten Ten Bar-B-Que was the People’s Choice, voted by those who attended the event. Competitors also faced the scrutiny of area mayors and businesspeople, who judged the day’s other winners. Meanwhile, Davidson Farmer’s Market was blown out and rained out last week, but the farmers are back this Saturday, April 23, with local food for your Easter feast – and more. And we have info about the Davidson Lands Conservancy’s annual Toast the Earth tasting on April 29.

Davidson Farmer’s Market kicks off its third summer of weekly markets this Saturday, April 9, with a lineup of more than 40 farmers, bakers, cheesemakers, chefs and other vendors from around the area.
Open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, the market has become a weekend destination for residents and visitors. The market has kept a twice-monthly schedule over the winter, and now returns to weekly markets through Thanksgiving.
“Our farmers and vendors have been working hard this winter to plan their offerings to meet the expanding customer demand at the Market,” Market Manager Mary Jane Leach said. Read the full story

La Parisienne on North Main Street in Cornelius is getting out of the chocolate business, and shifting to an art-focused coffee and wine shop with a new name. Friday will be the last day for chocolate, with all confections half-price for the day. The Davidson Farmer’s Market will host the last of its winter markets this Saturday, 9 to noon, next to Town Hall with winter greens, stored crops, meats, cheeses and more. Meanwhile, the weather is fine, but the best part of the growing season still lies ahead: The market is getting ready for its 2011 regular season schedule on Saturday, April 9.
