CONCORD – A new slaughterhouse that opened Thursday in Cabarrus County is a big deal for many of the region’s farmers.
Until now the closest slaughterhouse was a long haul. Many farmers had to take their cattle to either Alexander County or Gibonsville, east of Greensboro. That much travel cuts into the bottom line. Read the full story

For beer lovers, a menu of beer and just about anything else makes for a satisfying outing. Over the next week, local beer drinkers will have two chances to pair their favorite beverage with something good. This Saturday morning, the Davidson Farmer’s Market and Summit Coffee host another Beer & Brats Brunch. And then next Friday, July 6, Davidson Beverage Co. in South Main Square will host a Chocolate and Beer Tasting. On the PlanCharlotte.org page at UNC Charlotte’s Urban Institute this week, writer Amber Veverka takes a look at two Charlotte groups that are helping to get fresh, local food to those who don’t live near or shop at a farmer’s market. Sow Much Good and Friendship Gardens are both in the midst of growing, she writes.
Here in north Mecklenburg, we’d also take note of the Davidson Community Garden off Potts Street. The volunteer-run garden was organized a couple of years ago by Davidson United Methodist Church, and donates a portion of its produce to the Loaves & Fishes food pantry at nearby Ada Jenkins Center. A test run for Lisa Schnurr's Tour De Food stopped Tuesday at Davidson Beverage Co., in South Main Square.
Here’s a new kind of tour for you: Restaurant hopping. Winston-Salem-based Tour De Food will offer tours of Davidson restaurants every other Saturday beginning this weekend. Meanwhile, there’s some fun and fundraising ahead involving dining and imbibing. The Mooresville Soup Kitchen’s 2nd annual LobsterFest is scheduled Friday, June 1, in downtown Mooresville.
