Davidson Farmer’s Market this Saturday will have a tortilla-making demonstration by Chef Kris Reid and market-goers can sign the 10 percent pledge – to spend 10 percent of their budgets on local food. Meanwhile, Davidson College is looking for a few cake bakers to supply cakes as prizes for next week’s Freshman Cake Race. Details below.

With this weekend’s opening of the much-anticipated film “Eat Pray Love” at Our Town Cinemas in Davidson, Campania Cafe on South Main Street wanted to get in on the act. They’re giving away tickets and offering dining discounts to moviegoers.

The global appetite for bluefin tuna is expanding as more diners get a taste for the fish. Demand for bluefin sushi has been rising around the world, especially in Japan which consumes 80 percent of the haul annually. It’s not surprising to learn, in Paul Greenberg’s June New York Times magazine cover story “Tuna’s End,” that our “last wild fish” is overfished, particularly Atlantic bluefin in the Mediterranean. Chef Charles Grill 2 Go on Davidson’s West Side will shut its doors at the end of the day Friday, after about four months in business. Also this week: News about a new Friday evening farmer’s market in Cornelius, and political gathering coming up Thursday at Creole House.
