Mother’s Day around our house growing up always brought some kind of special dinner – usually something not on Dad’s or we kids’ lists of of favorites, but something Mom wanted that she couldn’t get away with cooking any other time. She usually got what she wanted, though of course in our household she also had to cook it herself. Small price to pay, I suppose, to enjoy something like roast lamb. Read the full story

We recently had a chance to visit Davidson Chocolate Company during peak season for Easter candy production. John Elliott showed us how the shop makes its solid chocolate Easter bunnies. It’s a big time of year for the chocolate business, and the shop at Davidson Commons expected to sell several hundred of the confections by Easter Sunday.

Local eateries are participating in the 2011 Autism Aware Fare fund-raiser on Tuesday, April 26, some with specials and wine dinners. Meanwhile, Davidson Farmer’s Market was blown out and rained out last week, but the farmers are back this Saturday, April 23, with local food for your Easter feast – and more. And we have info about the Davidson Lands Conservancy’s annual Toast the Earth tasting on April 29.

It’s springtime in North Carolina. The weather is warm, the greenery is lush, and vines are promising lots of summer tomatoes. But, not just yet.
I love a fresh tomato salsa but have been underwhelmed by the tomatoes available in the grocery stores right now. Recently a friend requested I bring salsa to a dinner party, so I turned to the tomato’s cousin: the tomatillo. I also took advantage of some leftover poblano peppers. This salsa is great with baked corn tortilla chips (or just regular old chips).
