A bakery is in the works for downtown Davidson: The MillStone Bake House is hoping for an early 2014 opening after renovations on a historic building on South Main Street. Cornelius is seeing a wave of new dining options this fall, from restaurants to a coffee shop to a new events venue called The Pearl, run by longtime local caterer Armin Desch. Food truck aficionados gather ’round: The first Cornelius Food Truck Invitational, presented by Bella Love Inc., will be at the Oak Street Mill in Cornelius on Saturday, Nov. 23, from 3-8 pm.

Look for some of your favorite Lake Norman area meals on wheels, including: Root Down Food Cart, Belly Backers, Turkey_and, Sunrise Grill & Sandwich Co., Roman’s Treats and Dogs, The Plated Palette, Smoke and Go BBQ, Maryland Crab co., Wafflezandwingz, Juan’s Taco, and Queen City Q. The Davidson Farmer’s Market has shifted to its every-other-week winter schedule, but will be open three consecutive Saturdays in November – the 16th, 23rd and 30th. The market is open from 9am to noon on the market ground next to Davidson Town Hall, 216 S. Main St., Davidson.

Farmers market organizers say vendors will be stocked-up with winter produce, meats, cheeses, honey, seafood, breads, prepared foods, apples, granola, flowers and more. Produce likely will include kohlrabi, lettuce, arugula, fennel, beets, carrots, bok choy, collards, cukes, potatoes, butternut squash, gilfeather turnips and kale. Meat vendors will have stew meat and ground beef for chili, chicken for fajita soup, noodle soup or chicken n’ dumplings.  See a full list of market offerings here. Before Prohibition and the advent of mass-produced glass bottles, if you wanted beer at home, you’d have to collect it from the local tavern, using your own vessel – a bucket or earthenware container.
