Sat. at the market: 5th annual Salsa Showdown

[2]Contestants at last year’s Salsa Showdown served up their creations.
How hot can it get? The salsa, that is. Find out Saturday when the Davidson Farmer’s Market hosts its 5th annual Salsa Showdown, competition for prizes and the title as the area’s top salsa maker. Market-goers will help judge the event, where four contestants will use mostly market ingredients to concoct their fresh salsas.
This year’s contestants are Nick and Mykaela Pylypiw of Huntersville, Jacob and Kate Teske of Huntersville, Hayworth Szymborksi of Davidson and Brian Bailey of Huntersville.
“It’s another way for us to highlight using local in-season foods to make delicious items,” Davidson Farmers Market manager Courtney Spear said this week. “Plus the fact that it’s just peak season for salsa ingredients, like tomatoes, jalapenos, onions.”
Salsa-makers will be at the market before it opens at 8am, when they’ll be given instructions and $25 per team to shop for ingredients from the market’s vendors and farmers. They’ll have about 90 minutes to concoct their salsas.
The tasting and judging runs from 10 to 10:30am. The winner and any assistants will get $25 each in market bucks, to be spent at the Davidson Farmer’s Market.
“Plus bragging rights,” Spear added.
