Cornelius is seeing a wave of new dining options this fall, from restaurants to a coffee shop to a new events venue called The Pearl, run by longtime local caterer Armin Desch. Meanwhile, the newly opened FireWater will have a grand opening Friday at Shops on the Green, and Waterbean Coffee has opened off West Catawba Avenue.
NEW EVENTS SPACE: ‘THE PEARL’
Armin’s Catering has added a new venue to its list of locations for weddings, parties and other events: The Pearl, in the former Double Door Inn off West Catawba Avenue in Cornelius. Owner Armin Desch said he had been hunting for a new location because his lease at Blythe Landing was ending.
The Pearl, which opened last month, joins the Beaver Dam historic in Davidson on Armin’s Catering’s list of available venues. The company also has catered at the Ranson House in Huntersville, at Temple Beth El and museums in Charlotte, and other locations. Desch also recorded some successes in September 2012 when he catered events surrounding the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.
He has given The Pearl space a big makeover, so it’s suitable for weddings, mitzvahs, parties and holiday events, he said. The building has 6,000 square feet total, including kitchen and 4,000 square feet of reception space, which can handle up to 250 people.
Armin’s has been in business 20 years, operating mostly with leased spaces, Desch said. “It was time to expand, and I really wanted to have a space that was my own,” he said.
He’ll be working with executive chef Nick Apap, formerly at The Pointe Golf Club, who has been developing a new menu for The Pearl.
Why call it The Pearl? “I actually came up with that,” Desch said. “I wanted something not too classy, but elegant. My mother used to wear pearls. I like the colors and softness.”
ALSO IN CORNELIUS – WATERBEAN AND FIREWATER
Two other new eateries that have opened recently in Cornelius are:
- Waterbean Coffee is now meeting your caffeine needs in the Peninsula Village shopping center, at Jetton Road and West Catawba Avenue. The new venture by Cornelius resident Tony Vo combines his love of both coffee and cars. It’s a wide open space, with plenty of room to stretch your legs and relax. Vo told our Around Cornelius columnist Robin Gibson the shop’s name is a nod to all the water surrounding Cornelius – and the fact that you need water plus the beans to make coffee. Waterbean Coffee is at 19420 Jetton Road, and open 6am-9pm Monday through Saturday, 9am-6pm Sunday. www.waterbeancoffee.com See Robin’s Nov. 5, 2013, report, “Sit a while, and meet Tony Vo of Waterbean Coffee”
- FireWater has opened in the Shops on the Green off Torrence Chapel Road. They’re planning a Grand Opening reception with music and specials on Friday, Nov. 22, at 8pm. It’s the second location for proprietor Ahmad Mohammad, who also runs a FireWater in the University Area of Charlotte. The Cornelius site became available with the closing of Cafe Confidential, which lasted only a few months in the spot. FireWater’s menu has something for everyone – everything from quesadillas to pastas to steaks. Mohammad told us he hopes eventually to have late night entertainment. FireWater will be open 11am to 2am seven days a week. Info: firewatercharlotte.com.
