N.C. Wine Appreciation Month marks industry’s growth

How big is North Carolina’s wine industry? Bigger than ever, according to a study commissioned by the N.C. Department of Commerce. The state now has 106 wineries in 49 counties, double the number in 2005. Gov. Beverly Perdue recently proclaimed September 2011 as Wine Appreciation Month in North Carolina.

The state now ranks No. 9 nationwide in wine and grape production, according to state officials. They estimated that the industry contributed $1.28 billion to the state economy in 2009, an increase of 58 percent since 2005. Meanwhile, the industry added 1,900 jobs since 2005, and now employs 7,600.

“Our wine industry creates jobs and attracts visitors to our state,” Gov. Perdue said in a statement this week. “This growing industry is a significant economic engine for North Carolina, helping to preserve farmland and bring revenue to our rural communities.”

Frank, Rimerman + Co. studied the industry, using 2009 data, for the N.C. Department of Commerce and Division of Tourism, Film & Sports Development.
