South Main Square’s Restaurant X has revised its menu while Flatiron Kitchen + Taphouse is adding a summer special – live Maine lobsters – four days a week starting next month. Also below, a preview of the 2nd annual Soul Food Festival at Rural Hill in Huntersville, and a tantalizing note about a possible new Moroccan restaurant in Cornelius.
SUMMER MENU CHANGES
Restaurant X [1], at 408 S. Main St., in South Main Square, has tinkered with its menu for summer. The popular eatery, owned by Chris and Christina Phillips, is elevating some specials to regular offerings and putting other items on the back burner. New appetizers include Buffalo Bleu Cheese Chips and a Four-Cheese Fondue, which has graduated from an occasional special to a permanent offering. New on the Main Courses menu is Beef Brisket, serviced with mashed potato stuffed caramelized onion and red wine demi-glaze; Filet Mignon with a mushroom/red win reduction; and Pecan Crusted Chicken Breast. At least for now, you won’t find the former menu’s crabcakes, flounder or lamb chops.
Meanwhile, Flatiron Kitchen + Taphouse [2] will offer a summer special beginning Sunday July 3: 1 1/4-pound live whole Maine lobsters. Chef Andres Arboleda plans to serve the succulent seafood with a roasted potato medley, grilled corn on the cob, and drawn butter. The lobster special will be $22.95, available Sundays to Wednesdays, from 4 p.m. to closing.
SOUL FOOD AT RURAL HILL
The seemingly never-ending parade of fun at Rural Hill in Huntersville continues July 2 with the 2nd annual Soul Food Festival, an evening of soul food and soul music. Organizers describe it as “an inviting event that highlights the aroma of traditional soul food cooking in the air while bringing together families & friends in an outdoor social setting for a day of reunion, information and live national award winning entertainment.”
Performers include Cameo, Barkays, After 7, Dazz Band, SWV, and Confunkshun.
Gates open at 5 p.m., and the music begins at 7 p.m. Rural Hill is on Neck Road, off Beatties Ford Road, Huntersville. More info: ilovesoulfood.com [3] or RuralHill.net [4]. The event is organized by The Kinfolks Foundation, INC and Dayson Company, LLC.
TANTALIZING NOTE
The former Picasso’s Sports Cafe in Shops on the Green, Cornelius, closed months ago, the latest in a string of eateries that tried to make a stand in the space. Now it looks like another is lined up. A sign on the closed restaurant at 20930 Torrence Chapel Road advertises Marrakesh – Morroccan Mediterranean Cuisine – “coming soon.”
The Mecklenburg County health inspectors have yet to do an initial inspection, but according to a note posted on the department website, “The owner is covering seats and decorating the dining area, he does plan to open at the beginning of July.” Nobody was at the restaurant when we stopped by. We’re in search of more information. Stay tuned.
