[1]It should be cold but sunny on Saturday for the biweekly Davidson Farmer’s Market winter tailgate market off Main Street, next to Town Hall. Stop by for a hot cider at the farmer’s market table while you shop. Meanwhile, the Davidson Senior Scholars will hear from an organic gardening expert at their meeting next Wednesday, Jan. 26. And Sabi restaurant will provide the food Feb. 6 when Davidson College’s Asian Culture & Awareness Association hosts its annual Lunar New Year celebration.
FARMER’S MARKET THIS WEEK
Davidson Farmer’s Market [2] is on a winter schedule right now, running every other Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon on the parking lot next to Town Hall and behind Summit Coffee. The winter weather hasn’t stopped patrons. Two weeks ago, 17 vendors turned up, and attendance was more than double last year this time, according to Market Manager Mary Jane Leach.
When it’s cold, as it will be this weekend, the market information table keeps a pot of hot cider going all day. Ms. Leach told us the cider is from Coldwater Creek, where Brad Hinkley grows several varieties of organic apples.
He blends his cider from two or three varieties because it makes for a more complex and delicious flavor, she said. This week’s cider has Golden and Red delicious, and Improved Stayman apples.
“This cider is unpasteurized and great warmed or cold with some of Cackleberry Farm’s farmstead Tomme de Marc cheese,” she says. The ‘marc’ is the pulp and skin left after the pressing of wine grapes, and Randy Fisher makes this crumbly and slightly tangy aged cows’ milk cheese at his farm in Cabarrus Co. The cheese can be tasted and purchased from Brad at the Coldwater Creek booth.
Also this week, Chef Charles says he’ll be back at his booth. “Please come see me and say hello,” he said in an email to fans. He said he’ll have Coq au Vin; Beef Bourguignon; pork, apple, Merguez and Roman sausage; assorted pate; baguette; pear ginger chutneu, and eggplant dip.
Meanwhile, the market has begun planning for its spring/summer season, which resumes weekly sales April 9. Ms. Leach invites suggestions for events, cooking demo themes, and products. Send to info@davidsonfarmersmarket.org [3]. And keep your eye out for a new customer survey in the coming weeks.
ORGANIC GARDENING ADVICE
Organic gardening expert Don Rosenberg will speak on building an organic garden at a meeting of the Davidson Senior Scholars on Wednesday, Jan. 26. The free talk is 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Davidson Parks & Recreation offices, 416 Armour St.
Mr. Rosenberg is owner of Instant Organic Garden, a business that installs raised-bed vegetable gardens in back yards nationwide. He will discuss how to have a garden that needs no digging, tilling or weeding.
The lecture is open to all ages. Davidson Senior Scholars meets twice monthly for lectures and presentations on a variety of topics. More information is available by calling Parks & Rec at 704-892-3349.
SABI SERVES AT LUNAR NEW YEAR
Davidson College’s Asian Culture & Awareness Association will host its annual Lunar New Year Celebration to welcome the Year of the Rabbit on Sunday, Feb. 6, 5-7:30 p.m., at Davidson College Alvarez College Union atrium. The annual event includes performances and food. At 8 p.m., the crowd moves to the Chambers Hall front lawn for fireworks. Free and open to the public.
The event this year will include performances by the Little Lotus Troupe, Hung Gar Kung Fu Academy, and a martial arts performance from Davidson student Kun Zhang. Activities for students or children include calligraphy, making dumplings, and face painting.
