‘X’ chef at market Sat.; new menu at Brickhouse

Chris Phillips

Chris Phillips of Restaurant X

dining bugRestaurant X chef Chris Phillips will be the guest chef at Davidson Farmer’s Market this Saturday. Meanwhile, Brickhouse Tavern owner Nick Lyssikatos tells us to look for a few “tweaks” on his menu. And we have an update on the former Soiree space in Mooresville.

RESTAURANT X AT THE MARKET

Chef Chris Phillips of Restaurant X on South Main Street in Davidson will be the guest chef Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Davidson Farmer’s Market. Chris promises a “breakfast delight,” using Grateful Growers sausage, eggs from Grey Road, and vegetables from the market.

Davidson Farmer’s Market runs Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon, next to Town Hall in downtown Davidson.

Meawhile, Restaurant X will be open on Halloween for Sunday brunch. That’s Sunday, Oct. 31, 10 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.

Restaurant X is at 408 S. Main St., in South Main Square, next to Fuel Pizza.

BRICKHOUSE TWEAKS MENU

The Brickhouse Tavern has made a few “tweaks” to its menu, owner Nick Lyssikatos says. The changes include shifting to all natural beef for everything on the menu – from steaks to burgers. That’s grass-fed beef raised without additives or hormones, he said. Working with his vendors, Mr. Lyssikatos said he was able to make the change with out affecting prices on diners’ favorite dishes.

Brickhouse also has introduced gluten-free pasta in its mixed-vegetable pasta and other pasta dishes, something more diners are looking for, he said.

The Brickhouse Tavern is at 209 Delburg St.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE FORMER SOIREE?

We’re still sore over the July closing of Soiree restaurant in Mooresville, but we’re heartened by what we’re reading about the restaurant taking its place.

Our friends at the Mooresville Tribune report that partners Larry Sponaugle, Jim Morasso and Rick Mack are planning a new eatery called Epic Chophouse in the former Soiree space at 104 S. Main St., opposite the Mooresville Depot.

Mr. Sponaugle is co-owner of Mickey & Mooch in Huntersville. Mr. Mack is a Davidson architect, with RDM Architecture. He is working on renovating the building into something the partners say will be different from Soiree. BEER DINNER GONE, DRINK PINK AHEAD

Last week we previewed a “Beer Dinner” at the Flatiron Kitchen + Taphouse, the first in a planned series of special food-and-drink events at the new restaurant in downtown Davidson. Thanks to the generosity of a friend (he’s actually the Flatiron’s landlord) we were in the crowd that sampled the culinary creations of chef Tim Groody and beers from Carolina Beer Co. in Mooresville.

The beers were all of Carolina Beer’s Cottonwood varieties – including some available only at the brewery. Chef Groody pulled off some excellent pairings. My favorites were the Low Down Brown Ale with duck confit, potatoes and apple almond chutney; and the wood-grilled hanger steak with stout-braised black lentils, served with Cottonwood Moonrise Rye Stout. Never had a rye stout before, but it was delicious. The dessert course featured Cottonwood American Wheat Ale, a 60 percent wheat/40 percent barley brew with hints of coriander. That went nicely with the chef’s warm orange coriander mousse cake.

Flatiron manager Chris Mallery tells us he has other events in the works. Stay tuned for news about a wine pairing dinner, much like last week’s beer event.

Meanwhile, Flatiron will be co-hosting a “Drink Pink” event with Davidson College’s Connor eating house next Wednesday, Oct. 27, from 8 p.m. to midnight. (The restaurant also will be open.) A portion of the proceeds from certain menu items and drinks will support Connor House’s commitment to raise money for breast cancer charities. More information is available by calling Flatiron at 704-237-3359.

HUNGER SUPPER

Davidson College Presbyterian Church join the Charlotte-area CROP Walk every year to help end hunger in our community and raise awareness for global hunger. This year, they’re hosting a pre-walk “Hunger Supper” to raise money for the Crop Walk. It’s this Saturday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the DCPC Congregation House on Concord Road.

They say the meal will “present hunger in a new light for those of us who don’t know what it means to go without enough to eat. This is a wonderful opportunity for families to come together for a thoughtful introduction to hunger, especially as we all start preparing to gather around a table of food for our Thanksgiving celebrations.”

If you’d like to attend, RSVP by emailing Madeline Burgess at mburgess@dcpc.org. Donations will be accepted. All proceeds go to CROP Walk.
