Tortilla-making at the market; bake us a cake!

[1]Davidson Farmer’s Market this Saturday will have a tortilla-making demonstration by Chef Kris Reid and market-goers can sign the 10 percent pledge – to spend 10 percent of their budgets on local food. Meanwhile, Davidson College is looking for a few cake bakers to supply cakes as prizes for next week’s Freshman Cake Race. Details below.
FARMER’S MARKET THIS WEEK
The Davidson Farmer’s Market will be open again this Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon next to Town Hall. Here are some of the highlights of this week’s market:
- Chef Kris Reid will offer a tortilla making demonstration and will then be
making easy quesadilla recipes featuring various foods from the market. - Sign up for the NC 10% local food campaign — everyone across the state is
encouraged to pledge to spend 10% of their existing food budget on locally grown

CAKES FOR THE CAKE RACE
The 506-member Davidson College class of 2014 will be arriving on campus this week, and that means the time is fast approaching for the annual Freshman Cake Race. The 71st annual race is next Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Richardson Stadium. The race gets its name from the tradition of giving cakes as prizes to the race finishers. There’s another important part of the tradition: We bring the cakes.
You don’t have to bake – store-bought cakes are fine, too. If you’re interested in joining the fun, bring your cake to the lobby of the Baker Sports Complex at Davidson before 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 25. Tape your name on the bottom of your cake unless you wish to remain anonymous. Please send your cake on a disposable plate (paper plate, foil covered cardboard).
