Farmer’s market beats fund-raising goal

With help from donations during a busy market on Saturday, the Davidson Farmer’s Market [1] surpassed its 2010 fund-raising goal of $2,000 by nearly one-half. Officials with non-profit group said Tuesday their Friends of the Market “Sweet Pea” campaign brought in a total of $2,984.
The market, which won independent non-profit status earlier this month, relies on community support to help pay its roughly $625 weekly operating costs.
“We were thrilled with the tremendous support received during the Sweet Pea campaign,” said market manager Mary Jane Leach. “It really shows that our community cares about local farming and that they appreciate having a source of fresh, locally sourced food from people they know. These funds will go a long way in helping us to meet our mission and support the vibrant local food economy.”

SALSA SHOWDOWN
The market operates every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon from May to October off Main Street next to Town Hall. Several dozen vendors sell a variety of local produce, meats and poultry, honey, flowers, and baked and canned goods.
The market is seeking entries for another big event later this month: its first Salsa Showdown. Scheduled for Saturday, July 24, the contest invites local chefs to turn local summer produce into their favorite salsa. Four chefs will be selected through a random drawing to compete on the 24th. Entries must be received by July 17. All market patrons on the 24th will be invited to taste the competing salsas. The 2010 Salsa Showdown winner will be crowned at 10:30 a.m.
