Mooresville commissioner Rhett Dusenbury will present a proposal to fellow board members Monday, Oct. 15, for introducing political parties to town elections. Miles Atkins
Davidson Mayor John Woods was among several area mayors re-elected Tuesday, while voters in Mooresville chose a new leader – Miles Atkins – who stepped up from an at-large seat on the Mooresville board. Huntersville Mayor Jill Swain kept her job despite a challenge, while Cornelius Mayor Jeff Tarte ran unopposed.
The results could mean at least some continuity as the towns continue to cooperate on regional issues. They include the MI-Connection Communications System, which Davidson owns with Mooresville, and transportation issues, including I-77 widening and bringing the Red Line commuter rail to the Lake Norman area. STATESVILLE - Mooresville at-large commissioner Miles Atkinson Monday filed to run for mayor in the Nov. 8 election, registering at the Iredell County Board of Elections office accompanied by his son Liam and campaign team member Don Bartell.
Mr. Atkins will face off against Jared Esselman, who announced last week that he’s also running. Mr. Esselman also registered Monday.
Also Monday, Dawn Huston filed as a candidate for Mr. Atkins’ at-large seat. And incumbent Commissioner Thurman Houston filed papers to seek re-election to his Ward 2 seat.

Jared Esselman
Iraq veteran and recent Harvard University graduate Jared Esselman has announced plans to run for mayor in Mooresville, the Mooresville Tribune reports.
He joins at-large commissioner Miles Atkins in seeking the job, which will be vacant because current Mayor Chris Montgomery is not seeking re-election.
“I’m running for mayor because I love my hometown and I love the people here,” Mr. Esselman told the Tribune. Read the full story
