NC Libertarians back non-partisan redistricting

Libertarian Party members at their state convention two weeks ago in Durham voted to endorse efforts to create a nonpartisan redistricting process in North Carolina.  In a report before the vote, the party’s platform committee said the move would create a “truly representative government.”

The party also called for an even more dramatic election reform: proportional representation for the state legislature.  Under that system, an election district would have multiple members instead of a single representative, potentially giving smaller parties or independents a voice. 5 Dems seek county commission at-large nominations

Five Democrats have registered to run for the three at-large seats on the Mecklenburg County Commission this fall, while two Republicans also have entered the race. Filing for local elections closed Friday. Meanwhile, in county commission District 1, Democrat Leonard Richardson and Republican Jim Puckett have signed up to run for the seat to be vacated by Karen Bentley, who’s stepping down after four terms. State Sen. Jeff Tarte learned Friday he’ll be unopposed for re-election this fall, while state Rep. Charles Jeter (R-Huntersville) will face a rematch this fall against his 2012 opponent, Democrat Robin Bradford.
