The 2014 race for North Carolina’s U.S. Senate seat is set. Thom Tillis will take on Kay Hagan this November. Tillis won the Republican primary Tuesday, garnering 45 percent of the vote, avoiding a runoff.

Tillis’ supporters started gathering in the Omni ballroom in downtown Charlotte just as the results started trickling in. Soon, there were a few hundred supporters on hand, all waiting to hear from the man they believe can take down the junior senator from North Carolina. Continue Reading

Cornelius Commissioner John Bradford easily captured the Republican nomination for the N.C. General Assembly’s 98th District seat Tuesday, and immediately looked ahead to the November election. After a campaign in which his Republican opponents attacked his stance on income taxes and highway tolls, among other things, he said he’s hoping for a cleaner campaign this fall in the general election against Democrat Natasha Marcus.

“I think District 98 sent a very clear message and that is positive campaigns can win elections and you win elections on your own record and your own merit,” he said.

Early primary voting starts at Cornelius, Huntersville sites

election 2014 bugEarly voting in the May 6 primary for state and local offices began Thursday at sites across Mecklenburg County, including two in north Mecklenburg.

But Tuesday night’s debate in Duke Family Performance Hall at Davidson College was remarkable for its civility, not its discord.

The debate, which was sponsored by The Charlotte Observer and the News & Observer of Raleigh and televised by Time Warner Cable News, gave a platform to the four Republican Senate hopefuls who each currently have more than 7 percent support in state-wide polls.
