Getting there will require community-wide commitment to help win new customers, officials say

MOORESVILLE – Could the money-losing MI-Connection Communications System swing from red ink to black in just 12 months? MI-Connection officials think it can be done, with a revved-up marketing campaign that sends town commissioners on sales pitches to community groups and businesses, and enlists citizens to refer new customers in exchange for cash rewards or donations to their favorite charities.
That’s the gist of a new community-focused marketing campaign that MI-Connection officials presented Monday night during an unusual 90-minute joint meeting between the system’s board of directors and the town boards of Davidson and Mooresville, which own the area cable and internet system.

The MI-Connection Communications System board of directors and the town boards of Davidson and Mooresville will hold a special joint public meeting Monday night, Aug. 16, to review the system’s history, outlook, and planned community marketing efforts. The meeting is open to the public and begins at 6 p.m. at Mooresville Town Hall, 413 N. Main St., Mooresville.

Preliminary year-end results at the town-owned MI-Connection Communications System are out, and the system’s general manager says they’re headed in the right direction.
Expenses fell, revenues grew, and so did profits from operations in the fiscal year that ended June 30. The total number of customers at the town-owned MI-Communications Communications System was up slightly in June, compared with a year earlier, as the system continued to sign up new telephone and internet customers. But the decline in cable TV customers continued, and the system continued losing money after debt payments. Read the full story

Updated 9:01 p.m.A piece of networking equipment failed Sunday morning at the Mooresville-based MI-Connection Communications System, cutting off access to most of the system’s internet customers in the Lake Norman Area. The outage also affected the company’s customer support phone lines, which were out most of the day.

Report shows growth in commercial business at the town-owned cable system, but competition too.
