By a wide margin Tuesday, Mecklenburg County voters approved a $250 million parks & recreation bond package that includes money for the proposed community recreation center at Davidson IB Middle School on South Street, sports fields at the new Bradford District Park east of town, and for extending local greenways.

Barack Obama won 54 percent of the votes in Davidson Tuesday. But the town’s two polling places offered a split preference, reflecting the difference between the Democratic-leaning older parts of town and the Republican-leaning neighborhoods of River Run and McConnell.

Kids had a chance to learn about elections Tuesday by casting their votes in the 2008 edition of Kids Voting USA. An unofficial tally of the ballots at Davidson’s Town Hall polling station, Precinct 206, at 7:30 p.m. gave Democrat Barack Obama the edge with 89 votes. Vicki Blaney has never been involved in politics, but this year’s presidential election has inspired her. The McConnell resident has been working long hours with an army of about 100 local volunteers helping get out the vote for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. Jon Meacham, editor of Newsweek magazine, will be a Davidson College on Monday, Nov. 10, to give a free public lecture titled “Decision 2008: How it Happened and What’s Ahead.” Mr. Meacham’s talk, which is this year’s Wearn Lecture, begins at 8 p.m. in Duke Family Performance Hall.
