Tom Marshburn calls his experience aboard the International Space Station earlier this year “the magic of living in space.” The NASA astronaut and 1982 Davidson College graduate shared that thought and talked about the impact of zero gravity on scientific research in two public lectures at Davidson College Tuesday.

NASA astronaut Tom Marshburn, a 1982 Davidson graduate and Statesville native, returned in May from a six-month mission aboard the International Space Station and he’ll talk about the experience at Davidson College on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

“Off the Earth: Living and Working in Outer Space Aboard the International Space Station” is the title of Marshburn’s talk, which begins at 7:30pm at Duke Family Performance Hall, in the Alvarez College Union. Read the full story

Davidson College alumnus and NASA astronaut Tom Marshburn ’82 will speak live from the International Space Station on Monday, April 22 from 4:55 to 5:25. A video downlink hosted by Davidson College will be broadcast live to the 900 Room in Alvarez College Union, where doors will open at 4:15 and will close at 4:45. Seating is limited, but the event will be simulcast on video monitors in an overflow area outside of the 900 Room, as well as online at http://www.davidson.edu/live/. Read the full story

A technological glitch didn’t allow a two-way conversation, but NASA astronaut and Davidson College alumnus Dr. Tom Marshburn ’82 spoke to a college audience and showed off a few zero-gravity tricks during a live video downlink from the International Space Station Friday afternoon.

Dr. Marshburn spoke about his time in the space station, but questions from those gathered in the Alvarez College Union’s 900 Room could not be transmitted to the space station due to technical difficulties.

It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s Tom Marshburn!

Right on cue, NASA Astronaut and Statesville native Tom Marshburn ’82 and his International Space Station crewmates will fly over the Lake Norman area tonight (Tuesday), in a 230-mile-high orbital preview to this Friday’s planned video downlink direct to Davidson College.

It’s been fun and an honor to be in the middle of planning for the downlink event, which will also be live-streamed on the Internet (see below). Davidson College grad and Statesville native Tom Marshburn and two fellow crew members lifted off Wednesday, Dec. 19, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft headed to the International Space Station.  Flight Engineers Tom Marshburn, Roman Romanenko and Chris Hadfield were scheduled to orbit the Earth for two days before docking to the space station module at 9:12 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21. The new trio will join Commander Kevin Ford and Flight Engineers Oleg Novitskiy and Evgeny Tarelkin who have been at the orbital laboratory since Oct. 26.
