Demolition and construction are expected to begin soon on Mooney’s Corner, a $2.7 million mixed-use building on South Main Street next to Davidson Town Hall that has been on the drawing board since 2004. When it’s completed sometime early next year, the building will join Stowe’s Corner across the street in creating a new “gateway” to downtown, its developer said this week. Read the full story

Just a year ago, things were looking up for Grogan Associates, a Davidson-based firm that helps banks and other companies manage changes in their facilities during mergers and other transitions. Grogan was hiring, and had moved its offices from Davidson Cotton Mill on Delburg Street to the top floor of the Stowe’s Corner, a new landmark building overlooking downtown Davidson. Firefighters helped two people trapped in an elevator at the Chambers building on Davidson College campus Friday. And a neighbor’s complaint prompted firefighters to order a Pine Road resident to put out a wood fire in a barrel behind his house. Elsewhere, Engine 3 provided traffic control for a motor vehicle collision March 10 at the bottom of the Exit 30 Southbound ramp, and routine fire alarms rounded out the rest of the week’s fire calls. Information on these calls, as well as a tally of the week’s medical calls, may be found below.

Good gracious! Does the summer heat seem worse this year or has your correspondent become a fussy, whining, pampered, air-conditioned housewife! Weeding, watering, hauling livestock feed or turning compost sends one first to the washing machine to toss in the sweaty clothes and then to the shower and a fresh “ensemble” until you head outside once more. Whew! It’s hot!

Two fire calls came in over the past week from the new Flatiron Kitchen restaurant at Stowe’s Corner in downtown Davidson, though neither involved fires. A false alarm last Friday evening forced diners to evacuate. Fire officials warned managers about alarm system troubles and also reminded them that the restaurant must be evacuated promptly in the event of an alarm. This morning (Thursday), firefighters checked on a report of smoke in an air-conditioning unit. Also over the past week, several false alarms were reported at Davidson College, including one at the Cunningham Fine Arts building Wednesday. Details about those and other fire calls, plus the week’s tally of emergency medical calls, are below:

The landlord for the planned Flatiron Kitchen & Tap Room at Stowe’s Corner in downtown Davidson has arranged for a temporary parking lot on South Street that could help relieve potential parking issues at the new restaurant. Meanwhile, construction has begun on the new restaurant space, which is expected to open this summer.
