Just a year ago, things were looking up for Grogan Associates, a Davidson-based firm that helps banks and other companies manage changes in their facilities during mergers and other transitions. Grogan was hiring, and had moved its offices from Davidson Cotton Mill on Delburg Street to the top floor of the Stowe’s Corner, a new landmark building overlooking downtown Davidson. Main Street in downtown Davidson will close for two hours on Wednesday night (Sept. 29), between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., so a crane can lift air conditioning units onto the roof of the Stowe’s Corner building at South Main and South streets. The closing had been scheduled for Monday night, but was postponed because of rain.

As the town continues its year-long focus on downtown redevelopment, a couple of milestones are looming, Downtown Director Sandy Lemons said in a presentation at Tuesday’s Town Board meeting.
- First, Davidson has been named a finalist in the N.C. Main Street Program, which helps cities and towns develop their downtowns. Ms. Lemons wasn’t sure how many finalists there are, but said three or four might be accepted. A final decision is expected in October. If selected, Davidson would get money and technical help in revitalizing downtown.
- Ms. Lemons also announced that Davidson has hired the consulting firm Arnett Muldrow & Associates of Greenville, S.C. to develop a branding and marketing plan.

A view of the Stowe Building under construction at South Main and South streets Tuesday, and the architect's rendering of the planned building. Developer David Stewart told DavidsonNews.net he is on track to deliver "shell space" to tenants in June.
A feature story by Joe Marusak in Tuesday’s Charlotte Observer takes a look at Davidson’s planning policies that require new commercial buildings to have an upper floor or floors. The town has had the requirement for years, though it’s now becoming more evident as development downtown and around Exit 30 continues.
Planning Director Kris Krider tells the newspaper the requirement “is a smart use of space when you have a finite amount of land.” “A City of Two Stories” on the newspaper’s website also includes photos from an angle we haven’t seen yet, inside the building looking out, by photographer Laura Mueller.
