Many are wondering if the NCAA basketball tournament selection committee will actually pass up a chance to have Davidson star Stephen Curry in this year’s Big Dance. Now Curry is speaking out about it, saying his team deserves a spot in the tourney.
In an interview with the Associated Press Thursday, Curry noted that the Wildcats have a good record (26-7) and wins against teams like West Virginia and N.C. State. “If we get a shot,” he says, “we can do something with it.”
Curry is Wooden finalist
Meanwhile, Curry is a finalist, along with UNC’s Tyler Hansbrough and others, for this year’s John R. Wooden Award, which is given to the top collegiate player nationwide.

Davidson’s men’s basketball team lost out on a chance for an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament when, despite being the favorite, it failed to win this weekend’s Southern Conference tournament. (See our report and photo gallery, “Davidson falls to Charleston in tourney; NCAA hopes gone?”) That all but rules the Wildcats out for this year’s March Madness. Or does it? Davidson lost a close battle to the College of Charleston, 59-52, in semifinals of the Southern Conference men’s basketball tournament in Chattanooga Saturday. The loss means the Wildcats won’t return to their fourth-straight league title game. And it throws into question whether they’ll have a chance to play in this year’s NCAA tournament.

Here are Sunday’s matchups at the Southern Conference men’s basketball tournament in Chattanooga. Games will air on cable TV channel SportsSouth:
6 p.m. - Davidson vs. College of Charleston

Stephen Curry scored 43 points and Andrew Lovedale added 17 as Davidson beat Applachian State, 84-68, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference men’s basketball tournament Saturday afternoon in Chattanooga.

The Southern Conference Sports Media Association (SCSMA) has named Davidson guard Stephen Curry the Malcolm U. Pitt Player of the Year, it was announced Wednesday.
Meanwhile, in separate balloting announced Thursday, the 12 Southern Conference head coaches also named Mr. Curry as Player of the Year, and teammate Max Paulhus Gosselin earned the inaugural Defensive Player of the Year award in a ballot conducted by the league’s 12 head coaches. Junior Stephen Curry became Davidson College’s top scorer of all time Saturday, hitting 34 points to help the Cats beat Georgia Southern at Belk Arena, 99-56. The win also clinched the regular season South Division championship for the Wildcats.
The record was a tasty treat for fans in the final home game of the regular season. The win lifted the Cats to 23-6 overall and 16-2 in the Southern Conference. Curry needed 30 points in the game to beat John Gerdy’s record of 2,483 from 1975 to 1979. At halftime, he had 20 points, and broke the record with a flurry of points early in the second half. Davidson rebounded from a three-game home losing streak Wednesday night by beating UNC-Greensboro, 70-49, at Belk Arena.
Star forward Stephen Curry appeared to be back on track after an ankle injury, tallying 20 points and 10 rebounds. He moved within 30 points of passing John Gerdy to become Davidson’s all-time career scoring leader. Read the full story
