Davidson IB Middle School officials and parents are seeking help determining where to locate consolidated bus stops that are part of the fallout from big budget cuts at Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools for fiscal year 2011.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will reduce bus routes to some middle and high school magnet programs, which could save CMS more than $3.5 million, according to school officials. Read the full story

Graduation ceremonies typically consist of pomp, circumstance — and tedium. All those names to mispronounce. All those diplomas to hand out.
For Woodlawn School’s commencement Tuesday morning, tedium will likely not be a problem, even though every member of the Class of 2010 will be making a speech. The class consists of a grand total of two. Kathleen Elkins of Davidson and Chad Raines of Denver will be the first students to receive a diploma from the private school a mile north of Davidson College.
“We always thought we’d have a high school at some point,” said founder Dwayne Bowman, who opened Woodlawn in 2002 for grades four through seven. The school eventually added an 8th grade, and then a 9th grade, but students tended to head off to other places for high school. For example, the valedictorian at Cannon School, Matt Sarett, and one of the two candidates for valedictorian at North Mecklenburg High, Katie Driest, attended middle school at Woodlawn. What is that on the end of my line? (That's 2 1/2 year old Jackson Barger.)

Always glad to see a week of rainy weather – unless you need to cut hay! The pastures have never looked better but if one needs four days of hot sunshine and dry wind, the forecast looks a bit grim.
So instead of thinking hay, Around Davidson turns to news of Lori Reynolds’ Indy 500 trip, and Girl Scout honors for Troop 363 and Troop 1760. There is also news from the Ken Armstrong family and an honor for Stephanie Schauder – plus a first fish photo from our Memorial Day album (left). Read the full story

I hear a lot of nice comments from my Davidson neighbors about DavidsonNews.net and they often begin with “You’re doing a great job.” But since we started the site in 2006, this has been more than a one-person operation. Today, I’m sorry to be saying farewell to my longest-serving teammate, Laurie Dennis, who is moving away. At the same time, I’m happy to introduce and welcome Karen Cimino Wilson, who joins our team covering schools. Read the full story

The second graduating class in Davidson Day School’s history received diplomas Friday, May 21, at an emotional ceremony outside on the school’s lawn. Twenty-one students graduated from the private school, which is at Jetton and Griffith streets.
Diplomas were award by board chair Karen Wolter following speeches by Head of Upper School Brad Laatsch and Head of School Bonnie Cotter. The keynote speaker was Charles Spiggle, a Davidson Day parent who was a passenger on US Airways Flight 1549, the so-called “Miracle on the Hudson” flight that made an emergency landing on the Hudson River in New York in January 2009.
