Congratulations are due this week to students for all sorts of accomplishments. The W. A. Hough High School Army JROTC Husky Battalion won the Superintendent’s Cup, making it the number one JROTC program in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district. Meanwhile, St. Mark Catholic School placed 13th overall in the state Science Olympiad, with two students taking first place in their event and several others placing in the top ten. Also, Davidson Elementary’s Odyssey of the Mind team made a strong showing at the state finals, and 56 Cannon School students received national recognition in Spanish. Read below for details. 11-year-old Aidan Murphy was returned home to his family Monday night after going missing for several hours on Monday afternoon.
His mother, Michelle Murphy, said Tuesday he was found curled up, half asleep and shaking, against the wall of a dugout in Smithfield Park, off Catawba Avenue in Cornelius. Read the full story

Davidson Elementary School staff beat J.V. Washam Elementary staff in a charity basketball game at Davidson College last week. The event raised more than $3,000 for the Ada Jenkins Center. Meanwhile, Davidson Elementary School and Davidson Day School plan open houses for prospective students, and North Mecklenburg High School Students host an evening “stroll through the arts” May 3. And, J.M. Alexander Middle takes 4th place in the state Science Olympiad, and parents must register students by May 4 for the second CMS student-assignment lottery. Read below for details. Davidson Day School should be able to break ground on a new high school campus in Mooresville this year, school officials said at a gathering on the site Monday. A group of parents and supporters recently gave the school 40 acres off Faith Road, where the school plans to build a college-style campus for grades 7 -12, with multiple buildings, common areas and top-quality athletic facilities. The next task is to raise about $5 million needed to start the work, officials said Monday. Read the full story

Four projects by students from area high schools earned honors – and scholarships for their creators – at the first Green Idea Factory Competition April 14 at the Davidson-based Project for Innovation, Energy & Sustainability (PiES).
