Lightning strikes kept Davidson firefighters busy over the past week. One strike Saturday ignited a minor fire in a home in the River Run neighborhood. Another set off an alarm at the Pines at Davidson, but caused no fire. Firefighters also responded to four false alarms at the Ada Jenkins Center, apparently the result of malfunctioning detectors. Davidson’s River Run neighborhood will host a donation drive for Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont on Saturday, Jan. 30. You’re invited to clean out your closets and help fill up a Goodwill trailer with clothing, household items, furniture and even old computers. The event runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the athletic field parking lot, located at Robert Walker Drive and Davidson-Concord Road. Read the full story

The Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation Department has been notified that it has received $1.1 million in federal stimulus funds to build the West Branch Rocky River Greenway, a new section of biking and walking trails through the River Run neighborhood.
