Police, fire and medical units responded to a scary but ultimately unfounded report of an injured infant on Monday on Beaty Street. Last week, a Davidson woman was slightly injured when another driver backed into her car in the parking lot at Davidson Elementary School. And an 18-year-old man was charged with underage drinking and resisting arrest following an incident in River Run. Those and other incidents, plus the week’s traffic enforcement stats below.

Davidson firefighters responded to a report of smoke at Cornelius Elementary School and a pedestrian struck by a car at Davidson Elementary School, both on Monday. Last Thursday, they helped clean up after a garbage truck rolled over in River Run, after the driver swerved to avoid 2 deer. Those incidents and more, plus the week’s medical calls, below.

Davidson police on Wednesday arrested an 18-year-old man who is suspected of shooting a 10-year-old girl with an air pistol on May 31, Memorial Day, in the River Run neighborhood. Meanwhile, last week’s incident reports include a report of a garbage truck that rolled over in River Run after its driver swerved to avoid 2 deer. He was cited for reckless driving. Lightning strikes kept Davidson firefighters busy over the past week. One strike Saturday ignited a minor fire in a home in the River Run neighborhood. Another set off an alarm at the Pines at Davidson, but caused no fire. Firefighters also responded to four false alarms at the Ada Jenkins Center, apparently the result of malfunctioning detectors. Davidson’s River Run neighborhood will host a donation drive for Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont on Saturday, Jan. 30. You’re invited to clean out your closets and help fill up a Goodwill trailer with clothing, household items, furniture and even old computers. The event runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the athletic field parking lot, located at Robert Walker Drive and Davidson-Concord Road. Read the full story

In this year’s look back at the year that was in Davidson, we’ve taken a cue from readers in compiling our list of the year’s top stories. In 2009, the most-read stories on DavidsonNews.net ranged from Davidson College basketball player Stephen Curry’s decision to go pro and the death of former Wildcats’ star Mike Maloy to the Hough High name controversy and the October fire that destroyed a home in River Run. Meanwhile, the town added a bit of culture – a new movie theater and a public art sculpture. The past year brought mailboxes to the McConnell neighborhood and changes downtown. And the community came to the rescue of the financially-troubled Davidson Cornelius Day Care, one of the only area day cares to take children regardless of their ability to pay. The Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation Department has been notified that it has received $1.1 million in federal stimulus funds to build the West Branch Rocky River Greenway, a new section of biking and walking trails through the River Run neighborhood.
