Golfers will tee it up May 13 at River Run Country Club in Davidson at the 2nd Annual Swing Fore A Child’s Place golf tournament May 13, raising money to help homeless children to attend summer camp. A former Mt. Mourne Elementary School teacher is facing more than 100 charges of sex abuse, stemming from incidents in the 1980s. Meanwhile, Davidson police are seeking information about a hit-and-run in front of 230 S. Main Street in the early morning hours of Sunday, Feb. 24. Authorities believe a late model white Ford Escape struck the hydrant causing $10,000 in damage and seriously damaging the front bumper of the Ford, which was found at the scene.
Police also are investigating at least three counts of breaking and entering this week, including one in which $1,100 in cash and camera equipment valued at $350 was stolen from inside of a parked vehicle. River Run Country Club provided new details this week on a Davidson Police Department report about check fraud involving the club. They say the club was the victim in a case in which someone created and cashed nearly $23,000 worth of checks bearing the club’s account number at other locations. Read the full story

Police are investigating several cases of alleged fraud this week, including one in which someone created $23,000 worth of counterfeit payroll checks using the account number of River Run Country Club. A bank teller at Fifth Third Bank on South Main Street contacted police after a South Carolina man attempted to cash a fake check. Meanwhile, two Davidson residents reported having their credit or debit cards used fraudulently, and a Piermont Street resident reported that an unknown suspect recently opened numerous credit card accounts under his name.

Davidson commissioners on Tuesday voted 4-1 in favor of removing barriers from the end of June Washam Road, creating a new permanent connection to the River Run Phase 5 development and Shearers Road in east Davidson. The board also unanimously passed a separate resolution calling on the town manager to press the N.C. Department of Transportation to improve the narrow farm road.
Commissioners approved the two resolutions after a nearly one-hour discussion in which neighbors debated the relative safety of keeping or removing the barrier. Read the full story

Davidson’s Town Board will vote Tuesday night whether to remove a construction gate on June Washam Road, limiting access to the River Run Phase 5 development. The Board also will hear a presentation on economic development from expert Joe Minicozzi and get an update on the area’s victim advocate program, which helps domestic abuse victims.
