Just in time for the holiday card-mailing rush, a new post office counter opened Wednesday inside the Ace Hardware at 20510 N. Main St. in Cornelius. The store now sells stamps and shipping supplies, and sends regular, priority and registered mail as well as packages. Ace has been working on the partnership with the post office for months, and staff are pleased to offer customers a convenient, “one-stop shop,” Ace manager Dori Rice told CorneliusNews.net.

As of Sunday, Davidson’s mail-in participation rate so far in the 2010 Census was 28 percent, compared with 33 percent in Mecklenburg County and 34 percent nationwide. That’s a measure of returns only among those households that received forms, and doesn’t address the likely low response rate in Davidson so far because many people have not received forms.
Davidson residents who receive mail at the post office won’t be getting forms in the mail, as previously announced. The Census Bureau initially said the post office would deliver door-hanger notices to households that don’t receive mail at home, and residents would be asked to pick up forms at the post office. But that’s not how it has worked out. Instead, the post office sent back the notices as undeliverable. Read the full story

Pick one up and fill it out
Census Day is approaching next Thursday, April 1, and Davidson residents have begun receiving and sending back the 10-question forms. Can our town beat its below-average participation rate of 10 years ago? That’s looking difficult. If you’re one of the many local households that gets mail at a post office box, no form is coming your way. You’ll need to pick one up, or wait for a Census worker to come interview you in person. Here’s a tidbit we picked up from Brenda Barger’s Around Davidson column, in case you missed it:
Sheri Cole has taken over as postmaster in Davidson. (Brenda Barger photo)
The Davidson post office has a new postmaster, or technically an “officer in charge.” Sheri Cole
took over Oct. 5, and replaces longtime postmaster Elaine Funderburk, who officially retired Nov. 1. Ms. Cole. She’s running the office while the job is advertised and a new postmaster hired.
Ms. Cole previously was postmaster in Stanfield, in Stanley County. She lives in Harrisburg.
