My momma would not buy me white go-go boots in the fifth grade. She said they were a fad that would fade. Of course she was right – about that, and so much else.
As Mother’s Day approaches on May 13, here’s a tribute to the perfect mom for me: Mary Hill Gaston Flagler of Gastonia. Read the full story

Davidson College is protesting plans by Piedmont Natural Gas for a potentially damaging pipeline across land it owns in the northern part of town. In a letter to state regulators on Feb. 13, college officials said they have “significant concerns” about the project. The college also accuses the company of withholding information about the pipeline, which would begin construction in March.
The eight-mile pipeline would be part of a longer regional pipeline Piedmont is constructing to feed Progress Energy’s Sutton power station, in New Hanover County, near Wilmington. The gas company is seeking permits from the state Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as well as construction approval from the North Carolina Utilities Commission. Carol Quillen
When Carol Quillen officially takes up her new job as Davidson College’s 18th president on Aug. 1, she’ll bring with her a commitment to liberal arts education, a global perspective, and strong support of the college’s Division I athletics program. In an interview with editorial page editor Taylor Batten published Sunday in The Charlotte Observer, she said she hasn’t set any priorities for her first year. “My most urgent priority is to listen to other people. Davidson has a strategic plan, I need to listen to people talk about the strategic plan.

Gov. Beverly Perdue has signed into law a bill that puts local government email address lists off-limits to businesses and the public.
