We are almost halfway through October. One has to be continually checking the calendar to see what day of the week it is. Lo and Behold! A quick check of the desk calendar tells us that next Monday, Oct. 17, is National Boss Day. Good grief! Better be nice to David Boraks all day!
Before plunging ahead into a weekend filled with outdoor activities, Around Davidson is taking a minute to visit with Rosemary and Ben Klein, mention a few good books and remind all about the North Mecklenburg High School pansy sale this Saturday.

Carol Quillen
When Carol Quillen officially takes up her new job as Davidson College’s 18th president on Aug. 1, she’ll bring with her a commitment to liberal arts education, a global perspective, and strong support of the college’s Division I athletics program. In an interview with editorial page editor Taylor Batten published Sunday in The Charlotte Observer, she said she hasn’t set any priorities for her first year. “My most urgent priority is to listen to other people. Davidson has a strategic plan, I need to listen to people talk about the strategic plan.

Gov. Beverly Perdue has signed into law a bill that puts local government email address lists off-limits to businesses and the public. The new law could alleviate concerns prompted in January when The Charlotte Observer filed public-records requests with Cornelius, Davidson, Mecklenburg County and other local governments for the email addresses of citizens who subscribe to government email lists. Town officials in Cornelius and Davidson say they haven’t complied with The Charlotte Observer‘s January public records requests for email addresses of citizens who subscribe to the towns’ communications lists.
Mayors in both towns said this week while they support Freedom of Information laws, they don’t believe local governments should be required to disclose citizens’ email addresses. Read the full story

At meetings, Summit Coffee, the grocery store and all around town, Davidson homeowners are comparing notes about the revaluation notices they’ve received this week from Mecklenburg County. For many, the notices show higher home values, a reflection of the real estate market’s growth since the last revaluation in 2003. Read the full story

To the Editor:
In 1997, I signed up for my first AOL account and heard the familiar little jingle “You’ve got mail!” Now 14 years and several email accounts later, I receive more email than I really care to. According to research by the Radicati Group, the corporate user alone receives approximately 99 emails a day. That does not take into account any email you may receive at home. Now, The Charlotte Observer would like to add theirs to the list. (See Jan. 25, 2011, “Observer: We apologize, pledge not to send emails.”) The newspaper is using the North Carolina Public Records law in requesting information municipalities have on hand regarding citizens’ email, addresses, and telephone numbers.
