A national trade association that represents municipal cable and communications systems has named MI-Connection as its 2009 Community Broadband Project of the Year. In announcing the award, the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors cited the towns because they “refused to accept sub-standard broadband and cable service and decided to deliver better quality themselves.” Read the full story

The MI-Connection cable system lost $6.4 million in the fiscal year that ended June 30, according to unaudited financial results presented this week. That’s less than a June projection that put the potential loss at $7.65 million.
While overall customer growth remains sluggish, system officials said Monday they’re optimistic because of summertime growth in sales of new services, including telephone and high-speed internet. After a $22.5 million network upgrade completed in April, the system now can offer a “triple play” of those two services plus cable TV. As a result, it’s now often selling more products to each customer. Read the full story

In restructuring, cable system also seeks a new general manager

The towns of Mooresville and Davidson are reorganizing the board of directors of their jointly-owned MI-Connection cable system, and that means the board will be without a chairman when it holds a special meeting Wednesday, Sept. 2, in Mooresville.
Former chairman and Davidson town board member Evan Webster, who has led the cable system board since it was formed in 2007, is now off the board. And under the 2007 agreement that formed MI-Connection, seats on the board will now shift to 3-2 majority in favor of Mooresville.
Meanwhile, MI-Connection officials announced Monday they’re also looking for a new general manager who would become the public face of the local cable system as it seeks to grow after a major system upgrade. Read the full story

Town officials, executives and other employees of the MI-Connection cable and internet system, and a trickle of curious residents came to the Village Green on Saturday afternoon for a community party that was billed as a celebration of the system’s recently completed $22.5 million upgrade.

This week’s calendar of events in and around Davidson includes the start of a month-long discussion series on the ideas of the liberal Christian theologian John Shelby Spong.
