“Ken and I have made exercising and staying healthy a priority”, says Stephanie Bloom of Davidson. “Both of our families battle obesity so we shift our schedules a lot to make it happen.”
Sometimes this means bringing Sam, 4, to the child watch at CrossFit in Davidson, on Depot Street.
Stephanie and Ken alternate morning or evening classes to ensure they work out daily and they have Charlie, 7 and Sam, 4, enrolled in at least one exercise activity. The boys love CrossFit Kids, so their parents take them as often as possible. Read the full story

Girl Scouts are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year, and organizers are hoping to boost their ranks by forming 100 troops in the Lake Norman area at meetings this month. Dozens of children and their parents were on the Davidson Village Green Tuesday morning for “Northern Town Folktales on the Green Summer Reading Kickoff. The event included storytelling, music, dance and crafts in front of the Davidson library branch.
Entertainers included Steel Drum Music, Minsky Delmonte, Cara Zara, Hoola Hoop Fitness, Discovery Place Kids, The YMCA, and The Author Squad. The kickoff was sponsored by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Library, the Lake Norman YMCA, and the parks and recreation departments of Cornelius, Davidson & Huntersville. Read the full story

With summer right around the corner, children will have even more time to access their social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, texting, etc.). Students often use these accounts to express opinions, thoughts and emotions that would not typically be expressed in normal conversation – expressions that often would be unacceptable to peers and adults. Parents have the right and responsibility to monitor their childrens’ communication through these accounts.

11-year-old Aidan Murphy was returned home to his family Monday night after going missing for several hours on Monday afternoon.
His mother, Michelle Murphy, said Tuesday he was found curled up, half asleep and shaking, against the wall of a dugout in Smithfield Park, off Catawba Avenue in Cornelius. Read the full story

First-grader Jacob Batycki ensured his spot in today's news coverage of Artfest by affixing our favorite bumper magnet to his home-made coffee-can drums. He's the son of Lenny and Annette Batycki, who supplied the photo.
Davidson Elementary School held its annual Artfest art and music celebration on Thursday night, featuring the creations of students. Hundreds of friends and family members roamed the art-covered hallways, sat for musical performances in the gym and bid in a silent auction on items ranging from family photo sessions to arts and crafts.
