State officials over the past year have been taking a look back at an unpleasant bit of our state’s past: a eugenics program that sterilized thousands of women in the mid-20th century. Gov. Beverly Perdue earlier this year created a task force to figure out how to compensate survivors. And just this week, House Speaker and state Rep. Thom Tillis (R-Cornelius) said lawmakers should approve legislation to pay victims. Read the full story

Police are investigating a complaint by Healthy Home Market off Griffith Street that a customer wrote three bad checks on a closed account in February and March. Meanwhile, a local man told police a former tenant had damaged $100 worth of property at a rental facility and stolen a musical instrument valued at $500. The week’s accident reports include several rear-end collisions and an accident in which a bicyclist was hurt after striking a vehicle at an intersection in the River Run neighborhood.
