Davidson College will host its second annual Relay for Life overnight Friday into Saturday, to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The fun at Richardson Stadium begins at 7pm Friday and continues until 7pm Saturday, with music, games, and activities. A big crowd of runners and spectators is expected in downtown Davidson Saturday night for the second annual Summit Coffee Leprechaun Loop 8K road race and post-race festival. Organizers said 550 runners had signed up by Thursday night, and the total could top 700 by race time, at 6pm Saturday. Read the full story

The annual Angels of ’97 5K run and spaghetti dinner fundraiser is coming up this Saturday, March 16, at North Mecklenburg High School. The event is one of a series of annual fundraisers for the faith-based scholarship organization, established in memory of five local students who died before graduating in the class of 1997. Warm temperatures meant this year’s Polar Bear 100K and 50K bicycle rides on Jan. 12 weren’t very polar. But the weather boosted turnout to a record 660 riders, and that meant a record $10,000 check for the ride’s main beneficiary, the Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson. Read the full story

Mathematics professor Robert Whitton touched many lives in his 67 years, at Davidson College and beyond. He formed close, lasting, and meaningful relationships with family, friends, students, colleagues, and community members. Through his passions for literature, fishing, music—you name it—Whitton made connections that shaped lives for the better.
Professor Whitton died in November 2011 of injuries after was struck by a car in a crosswalk on Concord Road, near Faculty Drive, while walking home from campus. At that moment, part of the heart of Davidson was gone, but only in the physical sense. His devotion and his deep love and admiration for his work and his students live on every day at Davidson College. Read the full story

Hundreds of diners young and old tested out the soups at the ninth annual Souper Bowl, a fundraiser for the Davidson Housing Coalition at Davidson College on Saturday.
