The Arts & Science Council said Wednesday it will extend its 2010 fund-raising campaign until March 29 in hopes of reaching its goal of $7.3 million. The announcement came as pledges stand about 1 million dollars short, at $6.35 million.

Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson beat expectations by raising $100,000 Jan. 23 at its annual ICE Gala at the Peninsula club in Cornelius. (See photo gallery below.)
Meanwhile, Davidson Parks & Recreation Director Steve Fraher came away with the title Friday, Feb. 12, at a Community Chili Challenge at Town Hall. His “Colorado Red Chili” was voted best chili in the event that raised money for the Arts & Science Council.

Saturday’s 6th annual
Davidson Housing Coalition Souper Bowl brought several hundred diners of all ages to Davidson College’s Lilly Family Gallery Saturday to taste some of the best soups in town – and raise money for emergency home repairs.

The Fifth Third Bank Souper Bowl VI benefiting the Davidson Housing Coalition’s HAMMERS program Saturday, February 6 from 11 am to 2 pm in the Lilly Family Gallery of Davidson College’s Chamber’s Building. Members of the public are invited to enjoy and judge soups from local restaurants and at the same time benefit the program that helps local residents with emergency repairs.

At this time of year, the spirit of giving prevails and churches, organizations and individuals throughout Davidson are doing their parts. We don’t hear about all of them, but here are a couple that have come to our attention: That “Toilet-trees” drive for Ada Jenkins Center last week produced several carloads of personal items – from paper towels to diapers to home cleansers. And the Angel Trees organized by Davidson police and firefighters again this year will ensure that some of our less fortunate neighbors will have a little something under the tree on Christmas morning.
