The Davidson Fire Department assisted with several fire alarm activations on the Davidson College's campus last week. And Fire Capt. Dion Burleson says the department anticipates in uptick in calls as students return for the fall semester. Meanwhile, last week's calls also included two wrecks on Griffith St., one with a rollover that sent 2 people to the hospital. Two drivers were hurt after one lost control of her silver Honda on Griffith Street near Davidson Day School around 2:15pm Wednesday. The Honda crossed a median and struck a second car on the other side of the road before landing on its roof.
The Honda driver had to be extricated from her car and was later taken by ambulance to the hospital. The second driver was seen talking to rescue workers on the roadside, but also was taken to a hospital for observation.
Griffith Street was closed in both directions just east of the Jetton Street roundabout while fire and Medic treated the drivers of both the Honda and the second car, a black SUV. Read the full story

Big Lots has recalled 30,000 glass tabletop torches after some erupted in flames and injured users, including a Davidson man who suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns in an explosion and fire last month.
Bill Trull, 46, who lives on Northeast Drive in the Spinnaker Reach condos, off I-77 Exit 30, was badly burned on his legs after he attempted to blow out one of the citronella candles on his back porch July 8. The injuries were so serious that he missed a month's work as an administrative officer at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. Read the full story

The Davidson Fire Department received numerous calls during the storms over the past week, including several about flooding and a structure fire sparked by a lightning strike. Department officials reported a total of 35 calls, which was unusually busy. “That’s quite an uptick from 22 the week before,” fire spokesman Dion Burleson said. Problems on Gilead Road in Huntersville are getting worse before they get better. With the road already closed in one location, a four-foot wide sinkhole opened Tuesday morning in another spot – at the intersection of Bud Henderson Road. Meanwhile, other roads around the area remain closed because of damages from flooding during the recent heavy rains. Read the full story
