Firefighters over the past week investigated several natural gas emergencies. Emergency personnel helped PSNC Energy technicians clamp off a ruptured natural gas line on Walnut Street last Friday and investigated an odor of natural gas on St. Alban’s Lane Tuesday. On Thursday, Davidson units provided standby coverage for Cornelius firefighters while they responded to another gas leak, in the Heritage Green neighborhood. On Tuesday, one patient was take to the hospital after a two vehicle collision on I-77 north of Davidson, and steam from a shower triggered a smoke alarm in Davidson College’s Tomlinson Dormitory. Lightning struck a Lake Norman waterfront home in Cornelius’s Peninsula neighborhood just before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, sparking a fire that spread to the master bedroom and back of the house. Firefighters from Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville responded. Read the full story on CorneliusNews.net.

Someone knocked over a candle during a domestic dispute at an Exit 30 area residence Thursday night, bringing a call for firefighters to help Davidson police with ensuring that the fire was adequately extinguished. One suspect was arrested in connection with the incident. Firefighters also helped Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Huntersville police officers access the “black box” of a vehicle that had been involved in a collision earlier Thursday. Hydraulic tools were used to remove the vehicle’s passenger seat while it was parked at Archer’s Towing.
Also this week, emergency personnel managed a fuel spill from a transit bus and investigated a fire alarm activation caused by a cleaning crew on Davidson Gateway Drive. Details on these incidents and a tally of the week’s medical calls may be found below. Read the full story

Firefighters assisted the driver of a white minivan on Friday morning after his vehicle slid into the median and struck a guard rail on I-77 just north of Exit 30. On Thursday, Engine 1 and Ladder 1 were canceled while responding to a grass fire along I-77 at a similar location. The fire was out before firefighters arrived. Firefighters stayed busy over the past week responding to fire alarm activations and vehicle accidents. A moped driver was transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after being hit by a pickup truck at the intersection of North Main Street and Glasgow Street, and one passenger was transported for injuries sustained after being rear-ended on I 77 at Exit 28.
Also this week, student pulled a fire alarm at Davidson Elementary, and an unknown suspect discharged a fire extinguisher in the upstairs living area of the Kappa Alpha fraternity house at Davidson College. Firefighters were unable to reset the alarm system due to the excessive amount of dry chemical that permeated the building from the the extinguisher, and a Mecklenburg County fire marshal was notified of the incident.

Over the past week, Davidson firefighters assisted Cornelius emergency personnel with a furnace fire and investigated an odor of gas inside a River Run home. Units also responded to several calls on the Davidson College campus, including a stalled elevator in the Chambers Building, where they extricated two passengers stuck between floors. Davidson firefighters over the past week helped Mount Mourne Volunteer Fire Department with a major accident on I-77 and assisted Cornelius and Huntersville units at an early morning house fire on Brinkley Street. Other calls included a smoke alarm at the Homewood Suites triggered when a resident tried fry a whole fish in his suite’s kitchen.
