Cub Scouts from Pack 58 helped install erosion fencing at Brackett Bluff Nature Preserve, near Fisher Farm, on Saturday.
Davidson’s Cub Scout Pack 58 worked with Roy Alexander of the Davidson Lands Conservancy on Saturday, Jan. 28, to install a silt erosion barrier in the new Brackett Bluff Nature Preserve” near Fisher Farm Park.
The silt barrier will help maintain the pristine quality of the preserve by controlling run-off during storms. The Conservancy had discovered that a previous silt fence had begun to fail, and that erosion from an adjacent landfill was threatening the property. Read the full story

MOORESVILLE – Supporters of the Red Line Regional Rail Project north of Charlotte began their sales campaign in earnest Tuesday at a meeting of about 150 area elected and appointed officials. Leaders from across the region were there to hear the pitch, from Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx and Mecklenburg County Commission chair Harold Cogdell to town commissioners from the Lake Norman area.
There were plenty of skeptics in the crowd at the Charles Mack Citizens Center: local officials with questions about financing, retirees worried about higher taxes, and conservatives philosophically opposed to rail transit. Read the full story

The Town of Davidson has hired a Charlotte company called Goose Busters!to help with a perennial problem at Roosevelt Wilson Park: Too many Canada geese and what they leave behind. (Did you know geese can drop a pound of poop daily?)
Beginning Thursday, Dec. 1, and continuing three times a week for several weeks, the company will use trained herding dogs to shoo the birds away and will treat goose eggs to prevent geese from nesting in the park, which is off Griffith Street in Davidson. The town says the campaign won’t kill any geese. Read the full story

Campers enjoyed a bonfire at Fisher Farm Park Saturday at the Davidson Lands Conservancy's campout. (Davidson Lands Conservancy)
More than 75 people enjoyed a day of family fun – from nature hikes to skits to readings around a campfire – during the Davidson Lands Conservancy’s ‘Saturday in the Park’ family campout at Fisher Farm Park, off Shearers Road.
Activities started in the afternoon with a nature hike led by David Grant, Professor Emeritus of Biology at Davidson College. Prof. Grant led adults and children through the meadows and streams of Fisher Farm, talking about the spiders than inhabit this 200-acre preserve on the east side of Davidson. Campers got to see a “Writing Spider” (so named because legend has it if this type of spider writes your name in its web, your death is imminent) wrap up a grasshopper that got caught up in its web.
