Campaign season is getting into full swing in Mecklenburg County. The Nov. 3 local elections will give Davidson residents a chance to vote in two key races: Town Board and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Board of Education District 1 seat, which is up for grabs with the retirement of current school board member Larry Gauvreau.

Fountain Walker
Town Board candidate Fountain Walker said Sunday he has decided to drop out of the race. He told DavidsonNews.net he’s concerned that the responsibilities of town commissioner, in addition to his full-time job as Davidson College police chief, will take too much time away from his children.

Nick Gibietis
Nick Gibietis, a 35-year-old River Run resident and Apple computer account rep, has entered the race for Davidson Town Board. A Michigan native and Auburn University graduate, Mr. Gibietis moved to Davidson in 2008. He said downtown Davidson is “the reason I live here” and he hopes to help make it “more than what it is today.”
Filing for local offices in the Nov. 3 election closed at noon today (Friday). With Mr. Gibietis’s filing, the field now is officially crowded: Nine candidates are vying for the five board seats. Read the full story

Fountain Walker
Fountain Walker filed papers Tuesday to make a second run for a seat on the Davidson Town Board. Mr. Walker, the campus police chief at Davidson College, joins three incumbents and three other newcomers in vying for slots on the five-member Town Board in the Nov. 3 election.
In 2007, Mr. Walker missed election by 45 votes, finishing sixth in the 9-candidate field with 1,013 votes.
