Davidson police are investigating several residential thefts over the past two weeks, one in which a $300 chainsaw was taken from Meadowbrook Lane home where a suspicious person had been seen earlier. In River Run, two newly-installed 25 MPH signs were missing. Meanwhile, a Summers Walk man found that someone had used his Social Security number to file taxes this year. And a woman told police her personal information had been used to open a Dish Network account in February. Hundreds of visitors strolled among artists’ booths under a bright sun at Art on the Green Saturday in downtown Davidson. Four artists won awards at the event, and they’re among the booths not to miss on Day 2 of the festival Sunday. Meanwhile, the rainy weather has brought cancellation of Sunday night’s first Concert on the Green of the season, which was to have been a performance by the Davidson College Symphony and Jazz Ensemble. Firefighters responded to a several wrecks this week, including one incident at North Main and Beaty streets Monday night that brought injuries, and one on I-77 in which no one was injured. Engine 1 responded to a motorcycle wreck on Catawba Avenue as well, but the driver of the motorcycle left the scene before emergency units arrived. Construction dust at homes on Charden Road and Pine Road triggered smoke detectors that prompted responses from firefighters, as well. Leland Park, the former Davidson College library director, will give a lecture Sunday on the history of the college’s Phi and Eu halls, two of the oldest buildings on campus which are on the National Register of Historic Places.
The talk will be at 4 p.m. at Phi Hall, 216 N. Main St. It’s sponsored by the Davidson Historical Society. Read the full story

Main Street was busier than usual Friday night and not because of an influx of youngsters swarming the Village Green. Hundreds of art aficionados strolled along Main Street and South Main Street for the annual April Is for Arts Gallery Crawl. The evening also brought folks downtown for music at Summit Coffee, ice cream, and other treats.

Police are investigating two cases in which unknown drivers damaged vehicles in the parking lot of the Davidson Clinic and drove away without leaving contact information or contacting the police. Total damage to the vehicles was estimated at $1,000 each. Elsewhere, a woman’s smart phone was stolen from a bench at the Ada Jenkins Center basketball court, and police are investigating a complaint that a 48-year-old woman threatened a 51-year-old man on Jetton Street.
