With New Year’s resolutions around the corner, Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius offers community members a way to focus on getting fit – financially fit, that is. The church offers Financial Peace University, a program intended to teach practical ways to achieve financial goals. Also in January, Davidson United Methodist Church will hold its annual coat drive to collect coats for Crisis Assistance Ministry and other organizations helping those in need. See details below. Since 1997, the Counseling Center at Davidson United Methodist Church has occupied a small brick house next to the church on South Main Street in Davidson that once served as the church’s parsonage. But the counseling center reaches far beyond its name and location, according to director John Rowe. Read more in HEALTH & FITNESS»

Stile Antico
The young British classical vocal ensemble
Stile Antico, in the midst of a nine-concert U.S. tour, will make a stop in Davidson Tuesday night, Dec. 13, for a concert at Davidson United Methodist Church. The group performs without a conductor and will be signing a concert of Tudor music for Christmas and Advent from their latest CD, “Puer natus est.”
Tuesday’s concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at Davidson United Methodist Church, 233 S. Main St.

An army of young volunteers unloaded pumpkins from trucks Wednesday to stock the Great Pumpkin Patch for Missions at the Davidson United Methodist Church’s Molly McKay Youth House on South Main Street.
The Pumpkin Patch was scheduled to open Thursday, Sept. 29, at noon and run through Halloween, Monday, October 31st. Items for sale include pumpkins of all sizes, decorative corn, gourds, baked goods, and more. Proceeds will go toward youth mission trips at the church. Read the full story

Hard to believe September begins in two days and Labor Day weekend is almost upon us. Won’t it be nice to leave the 90+ degree days behind and pull a sweater out of the closet? Today Around Davidson reports on some couples who DID pull sweaters out of their closets for their travels this summer to the northwestern United States including the Cains, Millers, Stebers and Mases. We also have a report from Jeff Hassel on those huts on the lawn at Davidson United Methodist Church, and a project to bring new stoves to families in rural Guatemala. Read the full story

Cool feet on a hot day!

Whew! It is hot and aren’t we thankful for air conditioning! Maybe the best answer to staying cool is fill a washtub with very cold water and stand in it!
But we did find other ways to beat the heat. Summer camps! Today we report on Music Camp with Patty Gruce at DUMC, hear about DUMC’s Vacation Bible School, check in with Jennifer and Kristin at Fashion Design Camp held at St. Alban’s and visit with Caroline Besley spending a few days with grandparents, John and Caroline Plyler.

Police said late Tuesday afternoon that a “credible source” reported seeing the suspect in Tuesday’s apparent abduction on South Main Street in Davidson on a roadside in Huntersville with the woman he allegedly took away in his car. The “credible source” told Davidson police of seeing the man and woman around 11 a.m. near a “bright cherry red” car parked on the side of the road at N.C. 73 (Sam Furr Road) and N.C. 115.
