Davidson Elementary School staff beat J.V. Washam Elementary staff in a charity basketball game at Davidson College last week. The event raised more than $3,000 for the Ada Jenkins Center. Meanwhile, Davidson Elementary School and Davidson Day School plan open houses for prospective students, and North Mecklenburg High School Students host an evening “stroll through the arts” May 3. And, J.M. Alexander Middle takes 4th place in the state Science Olympiad, and parents must register students by May 4 for the second CMS student-assignment lottery. Read below for details. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ Parent University this week hosts a workshop on cyber bullying and invites parents and caregivers of students of all ages to attend. Meanwhile, the Lady Huskies soccer team at W.A. Hough High School on Saturday welcomes teams from three area schools for a charity soccer invitational, raising money for kids’ cancer research. And, Davidson Elementary’s Artfest will feature students’ artwork, writing and musical performances, nine Davidson Day students join the national honor society, and two Cannon School students will join other local students at N.C. In memory of teacher Mark DeSarro, who died unexpectedly last week, Bailey Middle School is encouraging students and families to walk or run in the “Run TOO Overcome,” at W.A. Hough High March 17. Also, Bailey students are preparing for a Family Fun Night to raise money for a Habitat for Humanity house build. And good news for Corvian Community School, who received state approval to become a charter school for 2012-13. Meanwhile St. Mark students walk to support diabetes research, and the musical Annie opens Thursday at W.A. Hough High, and Davidson Elementary students visit Washington, D.C. And, Davidson Day School celebrates Dr. Seuss’ birthday, and area students at Cannon, North Meck, Davidson Elementary and J.M. Alexander win awards in local science and math competitions. Davidson Elementary students presented research projects at the school’s math fair Tuesday and top presenters received awards and honorable mentions for their work. Meanwhile, students at W.A. Hough High plan a “Ping Pong Ball” to raise money for Special Olympics, Davidson Day School’s Robotics team takes second in the game table category at the state competition, and three Bailey Middle School Band Members perform in the District Honors Band. Eighth-graders at Woodlawn School this month made blankets to give to residents at the Brian Center, a health and rehabilitation center in Mooresville. The students visit the center monthly as part of their service learning curriculum. Also this week, Davidson Day students celebrate holiday traditions around the world and an essay by DDS sixth-grader Kara Bringewatt will be published in an upcoming anthology. Bailey Middle School this week has set up a new sort of “Giving Tree” in support of the Habitat for Humanity Middle School Build Project. Through January, community members are invited to visit the tree and select an ornament, on which is listed an item needed and a suggested donation amount. Also in this column, Woodlawn students Peyton Kelly, Ella Kiley and Libby Dy place first, second and third in the Cornelius/Lake Norman Lions Club peace poster contest, and W.A. Hough High still needs about 10 volunteers to judge senior projects next week. Also, North Mecklenburg High hosts a blood Drive, Davidson Day School celebrates global holiday traditions while St. Mark Catholic plans Christmas concerts and celebrations this month.
