Lynn E. Usdan, corporate senior vice president, general counsel, and secretary of Donna Karan International Inc., will be the keynote speaker at the 2012 Women’s Leadership Conference at Davidson College March 16-17. Organizers say the event is a chance for college students and women in the community to reflect and share experiences, through speakers, interactive workshops, and discussions.
The annual event is specifically designed for women by women, and will take place in the Chambers building on Davidson’s campus. This year, the Conference theme is, “Our Voices in Action,” exploring how women use their voices to lead, inspire and connect. Read the full story

A project to put solar panels atop Davidson College’s Baker Sports Complex has wrapped up, and the new technology is now producing hot water for a swimming pool and showers and a portion of the building’s electricity.
The $600,000 project is the biggest of its kind in town, and could save the college about $25,000 a year in energy expenses, college officials have said. It’s also part of the college’s growing commitment to sustainability. The solar-panel project was funded by college, the Duke Endowment and a North Carolina state grant that is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Read the full story

Performances by a group of Ugandan dancers and the Davidson Community Players, town hall meetings, a fundraising breakfast and auction and the next installment of the Cornelius Concert Series highlight this week’s activities across the area. The group Spirit of Uganda — 22 young Ugandan dancers and drummers — will perform Tuesday night at Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall as part of the college’s Smith Artist Series. The Davidson Community Players continues its run of “Children of a Lesser God” at the Armour Street Theatre, with shows Thursday through Saturday night and a Sunday afternoon matinee. Over the past week, Davidson firefighters assisted Cornelius emergency personnel with a furnace fire and investigated an odor of gas inside a River Run home. Units also responded to several calls on the Davidson College campus, including a stalled elevator in the Chambers Building, where they extricated two passengers stuck between floors. Winter camellia blooms are a joy to behold!

Have you noticed that the sun is setting later each evening? What a delight to sit outside these pretty afternoons and enjoy a bit of Mother Nature as the sun drops in the sky. Hope you have noticed the beautiful camellias which have been blooming all winter providing a colorful touch of beauty to our landscaping.
